We popped in originally just for a drink after visiting Aldborough Roman Town, but were tempted by the food menu. We ordered a starter, some bread and butter and a dessert. Food came promptly with a smile and the portions were very generous. I was delighted by the gluten free options on the menu, as I wasn't expecting to be able to eat. Their crumble of the week was rhubarb and it was fantastic. We felt really comfortable at The Ship Inn, the interior is traditional and cosy. The staff couldn't do enough for us and we had a nice natter with some locals propping up the bar. Our dog was also welcome and enjoyed a bowl of water and all the fussing she could handle. We can't wait to come back and try the Sunday lunch!

Absolutely fantastic Sunday Lunch at The Ship Inn. Can't understate just how much meat you get, it's a mountain, and you can mix and match all of the classic roast options. Beef and lamb were perfectly cooked, blushing pink. Sides and veg was also immaculate, with some great thick gravy, and ginormous light, crispy Yorkshire puddings. The pub itself has lovely character, with lots of history and all the charm you would expect from an old English pub. Well worth a visit for Sunday lunch, or even a quick drink.

Friendly staff and quaint atmosphere. The food is nicely presented, but I feel the quality just isn't quite there, my haddock was full of bones. If you visit, make sure you have a desert as they have a great selection. Overall, it's not a bad place, but I wouldn't rush back simply because the chairs are the most uncomfortable thing I have ever sat on, the padding has completely gone in them, so it's basically like sitting on a piece of wood.

More like the ship - wreck!

We researched this place in search of the best Yorkshire roast dinner. We were greeted with a sticky table, understaffed environment & people around us complaining…

We decided to stay and paid £40 for the first round and followed with waiting for 1h for our food. The table was sticky and we had no cutlery, we chased up the food (having a watched one young lad practically run the place - Luke)

The food finally arrived, the roast was cold, the sides were not what was promised on the menu, the other mains were also not as promised and not cooked as requested. We promptly fed back and it took a further while to receive roast potatoes and gravy that was warm. We asked for the chef as there was no manager and she refused to come out as she was too busy. She follows this by sending leftover dry meat and burnt roast potatoes s to make up for her cowardly ways.

Well done to Luke and Rory for having to deal with 3 sets of frustrated groups, two young lads should not have to put up with this level of happy people and there’s nobody in charge, I suggest an owner or manager shows up and takes some accountability and not rip people off.

Don’t trust previous glowing reviews as this place is now failing people...

A very cosy looking pub but wasn't impressed with our visit.. fair enough, we may have ordered the wrong meal and then started looking for faults, but here's my experience.. Me and my fiancè both ordered the mixed grill from the specials menu. It was £14.95 each and we got a sausage, a chunk of lamb and chicken fillet. This was accompanied with chips, beans and mint sauce. The lamb was fatty, chicken and sausage was ok but the chips were too chip shop for my liking. Nothing too much to whinge at to be fair but I was still hungry afterwards. For much less money I think a mixed grill should be as big as the Wetherspoons one. As I say, this may have put me in a picky mood but the way the staff were whizzing round was like watching flies.. it started making me dizzy. Yes they have a job to do but they would have come first in any speed walking race! Another observation which I hope they sort out before they get sued, is that they seriously require a 'mind your head's sign on the way in. The entrance is very low but I luckily avoided concussion on this visit. I'd pop back in for a drink maybe but not in the summer as it was way too...

Having just newly opened and us new to the area, we wanted to visit our local for the first time. We went into the bar area and found a little table and ordered at the bar. The young chap behind the bar was friendly and quick at serving me and the drink selection is exactly what you expect from a place like this.

We originally just wanted a few drinks but upon seeing another table receive their Sunday roasts we immediately had to have it. The roasts came soon and we found the portions were amazing. Loads of veg including cabbage, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower cheese. The main plate had the beef, parsnips, potatoes and stuffing on, plus the bigger Yorkshire pudding I've seen for a while. It was all amazing and we just about managed to finish the plate.

Overall the food was brilliant, the service was genuinely surprisingly good, especially since it was their 2nd or 3rd day open. We'll happily be back asap to try a few other items...
