Food is nice..when you get it.

Took close to 45mins before our food order was taken and even then I had to prompt the staff or I could well still be sat there.

1 starter was completely forgotten about.

Took close to 3 hours to complete the meal.

In fact, it wasnt even complete for me as I had to leave, forgoing my pudding due to the service times and having to take my child home as it was way past her bed time, when we really should have been home an hour earlier.

We requested take out for my child's pudding due to how late it now was. This took a further 20mins which we again had to chase, only for the manager to get a bit shirty with my wife despite us specifically requesting the take out as the children are in school in the morning. Sadly no one had the common sense to do this first. Popping a piece of cake into a box for the benefit of 2 children instead took 20 minutes. The issue?? Only 2 chefs on according to the manager. Apparently no one other than a chef is qualified to slice a piece of cake and pop it into a box. Which must truly be the case as all the remaining staff where stood around talking, including the manager, who is actually quite the specialist in standing around and talking while the staff suffer.

It's not like it was even busy at this point, or had even been busy all night, as it is a Tuesday.

Any other venue wants the table back after an hour 45, this place couldn't even get us our full meal in close to 180 mins.

Plus points: nice pints and hand dryers that are so powerful that they dry your hands and feet at the same time. Which is just as well as one of the...

Oh dear been to this establishment on many an occasion both for food and drink. Tonight was a get together to celebrate a friends birthday. The service was fairly slow but I put that down to being sat in the room at the end of the bar think we were just forgotten about. When our food came, two of us ordered chicken skewers which we had to send back the chicken was barely warm. The kitchen obviously just re-heated the chicken as one of the group had removed a few peices and the same skewers came back again only slightly warm not hot. Chicken should not be re-heated as this can be dangerous but when we mentioned this the waitress said she didn't know that. We asked if they could be returned and asked for New skewers, not re-heated. At this point the rest of the group had eaten. When the food returned it still was not hot but warm. I left the majority of mine (at least the fries were hot). Throughout the whole experience some of the waitresses seemed reluctant to help and did not at any point offer a sincere apology. When the bill was presented by whom we believe was the manageress she stated they had not billed us for the skewers. Two of our friends challenged her on this because our evening was ruined sending food back twice and not being able to eat together it did spoil our celebration. The manageress had a disgusting attitude, basically refused to reduce the bill further and more to the point did not offer a sincere apology instead stood there and argued with our friend. Very poor customer service. I certainly refuse to...

Traditional gastro pub with a very average selection of their drinks. Their 'boutique beers' section is fairly dull and isn't really boutique but the reason for the review is last night's atmosphere was just awful. They had live music on performed by a male solo artist who must have been rejected by X-Factor in the first episode every time he tried. The guy wailed and screeched his way through otherwise amazing pop songs and ruined every single one. To make things worse, the pub had decided to have the speakers at a very high volume, too high for conversation, so we were forced to listen to every single butchered song. And the last straw, he did three sets. Just when we thought it was safe to chat and catch up with old friends, the amplified cat strangling began again right up to last orders. It was so bad that we ended up laughing with painful faces at each and every song decision. Some of my favourite tracks now ruined, and I wasn't really able to catch up with my friends. Won't be back...

My husband & I visit here maybe once or twice a year, we have been numerous times Christmas Day, New year's eve and Family celebrations. We reside in London & my in-laws are from Huyton. My Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law have lived literally a 5 minute walk from The Tavern. We have had the booths on festive occasions, which is great, the service the food & the entertainment are spot on. I would recommend this well run pub/restaurant that definitely is a touch of class with a lovely family feel during the day & adult during the evenings. Great times there with Family amazing ethos and I would recommend it to anyone who lives by there or visiting their family it is superb

18th December 2024 ‘Wandering Wednesday’ this week took Hubby Neil and I on a little trip to Widnes as I had to pick up…. The pick up! as it had a little job done on it….. So on the way back we stopped at a pub called ‘The Upton Tavern’, very impressed with the inside, very roomy, pleasantly decorated and spotlessly clean. All the food was piping hot and very tasty, Neil had the Yorkie wrap and I had the fish and chips, also ordered a side of bread and butter and an extra portion of proper chunky chips, good size portions. Would we go again? Yes definitely…..

What can I say the staff went above and beyond tonight for me and my sons two friends with a drink on the house for us all and one for my son to sit on the table with us. As we sat and took the night to remember him on World prevention day 10th Sept and all those who also lost there lives too soon 💔. The staff also took the time to ask his name and said they would also have a drink for him, which was so thoughtful and touching so I would like to say a massive thankyou to the staff and it was very heart felt Thankyou
