Stopped for Sunday dinner as a group, to be honest the main reason we chose it was because it was one of the only places in the area serving roasts in the evening as well as having gluten free items on the menu, but it turned out to be a great choice.
It's a lovely traditional pub, complete with a log fire, the only negative about the atmosphere was their use of plug-in air fresheners which were a bit strong smelling when you're eating!
The food was delicious, and they catered very well to my food intolerances, which are slightly more complicated than just a simple gluten intolerance, as I also can't have nightshades (i.e. potatoes, tomatoes, peppers etc) or many gluten free flour blends (so unfortunately no roast potatoes, gluten free Yorkshire puds or cauliflower cheese for me!), plus a few other things. They were happy to give me extra veg to make up for the missing items, and I was very satisfied with my meal.
There were a few vegetarians in our party who had the nut roast, and all said they were very tasty. Roasts came complete with a very large Yorkshire pudding on top, mashed potato (in addition to the roast ones) and braised red cabbage, plus cauliflower cheese and roast carrots and parsnips on the side. My daughter had a child sized portion of fish pie which she really enjoyed (not quite as good as her grandmothers' apparently, who both make excellent fish pies, but still very good!), and they were happy to remove the prawns for her which she's not keen on.
Complimentary bread and butter was brought out before the meal for people to nibble on, which was a nice touch, and I'm told it was very good bread! I'm not sure if they had gluten free bread available I didn't ask as I can rarely eat it anyway.
Service was polite and fairly efficient, the only snag was when they nearly undercharged us, luckily for them we were far too honest and pointed out the error to them! It wouldn't have been fair anyway to cheat them out of money for an very nice meal.
If we were near Masham again we'd definitely come back, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a decent roast dinner...
Read moreThe White Bear in Masham is one of our favourite watering holes when undertaking our annual visits to Yorkshire. |A particular attraction are the well-designed and furnished bedrooms (£175.00 per night including breakfast and vat) which were specially commissioned by the brewery owner’s wife who clearly is an experienced interior designer. Each room has its own character and we like one that features both a large bath and walk-in shower in the spacious bathroom, Towels are large and comforting the extensive hot rail ensures they are dried for next use. The bed is more than King size with comfort and warmth de rigeur.|Downstairs there is a communal sitting room which offers a daily homemade cake for residents to enjoy with their teas - a wide range is available.|The restaurant provides substantive fare at breakfast with the Full Yorkshire quite a challenge. This comprises grilled tomato, mushroom, pork sausage, grilled unsmoked bacon, black pudding and fried eggs perched on crispy fried bread. A star attraction. However more modest dishes of fruit and granola followed by Eggs Benedict or Poached egg with mashed avocado and spinach on granary toast are available.|The bar has superb local bitter from the adjacent Theakston’s Brewery on tap and it is like liquid gold! A pint or two whilst studying the dinner menu is always worthwhile.|We enjoyed all three dinners ranging from excellent breaded scampi with tartare sauce and brown bread followed by a wonderfully flavourful homemade chicken tikka marsala curry to a sizeable prawn cocktail with tasty Marie Rose sauce and a Caesar salad with grilled chicken strips and crispy bacon. Typical price for a 2-course meal for two was around £60.00|The rooms are superb, the food is well presented and the welcome from all the delightful staff is always warm and friendly. Well done to Sue, her daughter and the great team of youngsters looking...
Read moreWe had the most glorious family birthday event here at the weekend and they could not have been more helpful, caring, thoughtful and lovely. There were fairy lights strung across the ceiling and huge lanterns with candles and vintage bottles with candles and balloons. Alongside the roaring log fire it was so cosy and twinkly quite the prettiest setting I've ever been in. Go and visit, try the wonderful Theakston's ale. They also have the best gin selection which the lovely lady talked me through - local gin, flavoured gin, beautiful botanicals. The rooms are immaculate with huge comfy beds and the best linen, clean modern en suites, extremely generous hospitality tray, and they are also dog friendly - we took our lovely Romanian rescue and she was so happy in the room. We stayed in Galphay and the other members of our party were in nearby rooms, all were large, scrupulously clean, comfortable and inviting. They even have a cosy guest lounge which acts as a hub - this has another roaring fire, deep sofa's and delicious cake to help yourself to. Go for a night, go for a weekend. Enjoy a lovely break and eat in the restaurant. We had a three course meal served as part of the birthday event and the terrine, roast beef and pecan pie were all perfectly cooked, presented and served. Breakfast the following morning was also exactly what you want - reviving strong coffee, several hot options and a cold buffet for a starter nibble. I had the most delicious bacon sandwich, our son had porridge and my husband had a full English. Every part of which was perfectly cooked. Thank you for everything. You made a family event run so smoothly and with such care. It was appreciated...
