We came to Wheatsheaf to see if the quality of the food at our ‘local’ had improved after several lean years.
The service was fine and courteous. QR codes to order from the table is good. Unfortunately, the food was the let down.
My wife had the thick cut pork chop with sweet potato fries and onion rings. She barely touched the pork. Some of the side dishes were over cooked - the onion rings particularly so - which I mentioned to our server.
My wife gave a 4/10 - she’s a harsh critic!
I had the beef Sunday roast. It was okay - but the meat was at the ‘well done’ scale, so a bit too dry for my taste, and the flavour was cooked out.
I ended up taking most of the beef and the pork chop home for our dog (she gives 8/10 by the way). It would be nice to be given a lesser cooked option for the beef.
My brother had the turkey lunch which he said he enjoyed but reported it as ‘nothing to write home about’. Serving turkey or chicken is brave - as they’re both a dry meat and very easy to over cook. I’d suggest over spooning a good broth then wrapping in foil to steam heat.
He gave the meal 6/10.
I ordered pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese side dishes. The cauliflower was over done and drying out. The pigs in blankets were fine but pricey.
The veg on the roast dinner were okay - the carrots were julienne which does make sense for speed cooking - unfortunately they were a bit too soft, but the roast potatoes were okay but a little tasteless - some goose fat and seasoning during cooking would help. Season the veg.
I gave the meal a 6/10.
I’m pleased to say that the Wheatsheaf has improved - but at an average of £20.50 per person for a one course lunch of this quality, it is overpriced.
Unfortunately, your local competition match your menu options - but they’re doing it better and cheaper.
I would place this more in the £13 per head. And whilst the repurposed car park/beer garden is nice it doesn’t justify inflating prices by 40%.
If you want to capture a market then I’d review the quality of the meat and how it is being prepared, or the price structure. Introduce some USPs that would set yourself apart. For example - proper home made mash with swede and butter, served alongside really good sausages and onion gravy made with good beef stock. It’s relatively cheap and tastes amazing, and it’s the type of dish that will keep people...
Read moreBooked for a party of seven a few weeks back to have an evening meal. Three of us arrived, ordered drinks which took around 20 minutes to arrive. Our other four of the party then arrived, ordered drinks that took approximately 45 minutes to arrive. We ordered food and were told because of a lot of bar meals being ordered the food would take around an hour. I had ordered the mixed grill, and after ten minutes was informed they had run out of chips. Ten minutes later a party of five sat on the table next to us and were told food would be a two hour wait! After ten minutes they got up and left. Shortly afterwards another table who had been obviously waiting also got up and left. Great we thought,we may get ours a bit faster now......no. After waiting over the hour, a young lad came over to our table and said the food would be a further 15 minute delay. When asked why we were told there was only one chef on.....so this contradicted the manager! Eventually the food arrived, minus one of our parties. The manager explained he was rushing and had dropped it onto the floor,so would have to redo it. By the time it arrived the other six of us had finished our meals. The steaks we had were awful, very chewy and full of gristle. Even the well done ones were very pink and underdone. Realizing we had been waiting now for at least one and half hours we were offered a table of free deserts, which never materialized. During the meal we had to ask bar staff to clear all the empty glasses from our table,we were offered no sauces when the food arrived also. We asked for the bill and were informed that because of the dropped meal it would be free. All in all a really bad experience which was a shame because we have been here previously and got fantastic service and food. If lack of kitchen staff was an issue why were we not called and informed of at least the wait we would have. Don't know what's happening at Wheatsheaf but it is not very good. As the last comment said, when the problems arise the young bar staff get sent out to passify the angry customers. I wouldn't mind but the place was almost empty. Which going by our personal experience, this will be a...
Read moreAfter reading on socials about new manager and a voucher pushed through the door for 40% off I thought I'd give this pub a second chance after been disappointed about 3 years since my last visit. Unfortunately on this occasion my disapointment returned 😕 We visited on a Sunday and booked a table online for 6.15pm. When we arrived we were greeted with a list of menu items not available. The list was quite long and the explanation was due to been very busy with the current promotion. Surely if you run a promotion and expect busier than normal traffic you plan and adjust your stocks accordingly? We got sat at table straight away and pondered over the depleted menu. I chose an ultimate burger and partner chose the only available roast which was turkey. Unfortunately I was then told no burgers available also although this wasn't mentioned initially. So I settled on good old fish n chips. After a short wait the meals arrived. Initial thoughts were again disappointing especially at the portion sizes. The fish could be described as only small similar size to a small haddock ordered from chippy at fraction of cost. And the chips were sparce and so was the small cup of mushy peas. I don't mind paying £17 /18 for restaurant quality food but unfortunately this was so far off the mark. The fish was slightly over done which made it dry in texture. My wife's meal was disappointing too. Luke warm at best, turkey very dry and hardly any gravy to offset the dryness. Roast potatoes were advertised as garlic but literally no taste at all. In fact they looked like frozen roast potatoes. The veg and Yorkshire was OK. I won't be back here soon, I was hoping for an improvement which is a shame cos its a lovely place sadly let down by poor quality food poor menu choice and poor portion sizes. In contrast the kings head in beverley which is the same chain serves fantastic food and more generous portion sizes off the same menu price. Maybe take a look at how they run...
