A cut above your standard Greene King pub, more akin to a village local than a pub chain bar. Set slap bang opposite the beautiful Frenchay Common and does takeaway cups for off site (though these are single use plastics, would love to see a reusable cup scheme in place similar to festivals....pay for a cup and either keep it or bring it back and get your quid or two back for it)
Good beer, cider and spirit selection and well kept cask....at sensible prices too. Food is standard chain pub food; fried/pinged or prepackaged and pinged....but decent enough as it's a Greene King so you don't go in expecting gastropub food. Though stock levels and ordering can be a bit erratic at times but always able to find something to satisfy on the menu.
Very family friendly too; supervisor/manager on shift today (beard and tattoos) was very friendly towards my son; making faces and making him giggle when walking past and making sure his plate wasn't too hot.
Overall a very good pub to have as a local
Update: still maintaining a high standard of service and rotation of gins & rums. Whisky selection is a little sparse but it's getting warmer now so gin and rum is the...
Read moreI recently visited The White Lion in Frenchay, and I have to say it’s an absolute gem. The charming atmosphere combined with the warm and welcoming staff made for a lovely experience. But what really stood out was the food, which was nothing short of extraordinary!
Ben, the chef, truly deserves all the praise in the world. Each dish was packed with flavor, skillfully prepared, and beautifully presented. It's clear he has a real passion for creating high-quality, mouth-watering meals. From the perfectly cooked meats to the beautifully balanced sides, everything felt like it was made with care and expertise.
If you’re lucky enough to be dining here when Ben’s in the kitchen, you’re in for a real treat. He’s not just cooking; he’s creating a culinary experience that stays with you long after the meal is over. If you haven’t been yet, do yourself a favor and get there—Ben’s cooking alone is worth the visit.
The overall vibe of the pub is relaxed yet refined, making it the perfect spot for both a casual meal or a special night out. Highly...
Read moreUsed to frequent here several times a week and enjoyed the meals and quiz pre covid. It was always a good night out and a lively pub. (Lynn and Emma) were great hosts , Popped in here Saturday night and it unsually was rather dead to previous times, ordered drinks all good, orderd a second round and again served with a smile happy days , then within 5 mins of paying for them we were told the pub was closing in 5 mins it was 10.20pm , awesome service! my wife left her full drink as she felt under pressure to leave !! The website states 11pm?? Safe to say we won't be back . (Went to the white horse hambrook after who were more than happy to serve us and not usher us out the door minutes later ) Hence the removal of my 5 star review and replacement with a glowing 2 star one . Can't comment on the food this time as we were scouting it out for future visits but we wont bother . Pleanty of other greene king pubs around . Only reason it still gets 2 stars not 1 is because it's a lovely place to sit on the common with a drink on a...
