We Always hesitate when we eat out when travelling. That pub is a gem.

Top destination in Folkestone for good food and local friendly atmosphere.

We almost went away when we been told they're full. After a 2 minutes conversation, we finally seat near the bar next to a local who was having food. We have been welcome and been put in a really friendly mood straight away. The landlady and the waiter are really really nice and DEFENETLY helpful. Their tap ale 'the forty niners' if i remember well was one of the best i ever had. The roasts were excellent (nut roast & mix beef/pork), brilliant vegetable selection and an unique crispy yorkshire pudding.

And at the end, the black cherry went very well with a Grand Marnier.

We love this pub. It should be an example for other buisness.

Again, Top destination for a roast in Folkestone.

Thanks to the team, the landlady & the chef.

We'll defenetly b...

What a wonderful find, we were recommended to try The British Lion by the landlady of the guest House we were staying at Sunny Lodge. We arrived just as the pub was opening and were totally smittened. The pub is the oldest in Folkestone 1460 and was frequently visited by Charles Dickens who lived in Folkestone. We ordered our meals and just soaked up the atmosphere. Both our meals were by far the best pub meals we have ever tasted. We enjoyed a bottle of red House wine which was also perfect. The landlady is a lovely person and it was her husband who cooked our meals. We had a fantastic evening and would thoroughly recommend the British Lion to anyone when...

Disappointing I was excited when we arrived such a sweet old pub traditional food and free seats for us. Ordered drinks then had menus passed at bar and told to order as kitchen closes at 2.30 (this was at 1.30). Food was fairly quick my partners cod and chips looked immense. My lamb arrive and barmaid advised there would be veg. 15 mins later still no veg my partner asked and she said oh I forgot then as placed veg down she said sorry kitchen forgot oh you have eaten your food (yeah the lamb and 4 new potatoes didn't take too long to eat). Mistakes happen and we are all human but there was no effort to make it right. I certainly wouldn't go again. Very...

Fantastic "old school" pub. The family went here for a Sunday roast and it was really nice. I remember coming here three years ago and nothing has changed. You get a proper family run pub feeling here. There's history and nostalgia everywhere. There's books, games, old photographs and menus highlighting the specials. Inside the pub is quite tight as the pub drinkers sit on stools near the restaurant seating. There isn't much parking around but it is worth the walk. Staff are very friendly and welcoming and the food is very good value for money. Will be back.

We arived at half past eight at night, was a little apprehensive about asking for a table due to the time. Was told it would be no issue, the pub was very busy. The food was served in decent time and had an properly homecook taste, feel and smell about it. Over all an amazing place looking forward to a Sunday roast soon!!! Two main meals, two pints and a soft drink forty-two quid cant complain. Absolute gem.
