An excellent location serving great food, let down by poor service and non-welcoming team members.
The exterior of the pub from the car park isn't the most inviting and is littered with so many car parking signs. Some hanging baskets or chef and brewer signage would make the pub much more welcoming.
At the time of visiting, it was a hot day, resulting in all doors and windows within the pub being open. This meant there were many and insects around the entrance and bar areas with no obvious preventative measures.
The wooden seating in the pub garden is in urgent need of maintenance or replacement; All chairs were squeaky, unstable and not pleasant to sit on. Despite the garden being of good size, there was no wow factor or pride from the management. Some flowers would make this area more attractive and inviting to customers. Chalkboards advertising the decking would be slippery when wet were on show - despite there being no rain for over 7 days.
When asking for a jug of Pimm's, the female colleague (with stick) behind the bar replied "We don't do that". I had to show the Greene King app which showed this was on the menu for this to be prepared. This colleague was not overly welcome and lacked basic customer service skills. Despite there being multiple team members, there was no sense of ownership which resulted in long queues at the bar and the same staff member shouting "NEXT" without giving eye contact or any form of welcome or manners. At no point did they give a 'Hello' or 'Thankyou' which was frankly rude and not acceptable.
There was a mixture of table service and bar service being offered which meant the restaurant/dining element was no different than a typical pub. We were advised to sit at any table but had to get our own menus - either offer table service or don't.
The best thing about the George Inn was the food, all dishes including starters, mains and desserts were of great presentation, taste and quality.
When paying, a team member approached the table with a tablet to scan several Tesco Vouchers, at no point did they interact or advise how much the bill had come too. This meant we overpaid with vouchers, instead of the team member advising this they simply said "That's all done". I asked for a receipt, and I'm glad I did. It just felt that the overall service wasn't there; Team members weren't interested and didn't attempt to engage at any point.
Given the excellent location of this pub (by the Canal) the venue could be so much more. Having previously visited the pub, The significant lack of pride and management really shows. This could be a pub with a bustling and great atmosphere - but given the rudeness of the 'duty manager' and poor standards we won't be returning.
Having read some other reviews after posting, it seems the same 'duty manager' is the landlady of the George Inn. There is only so many times you can apologise and say 'sorry if I came across as rude'. Offering a 'Hello' or giving a 'Thankyou' at the end of a transaction is BASIC...
Read moreNice olde worlde looking pub both inside and out, and located in a nice spot alongside a canal with a large car park. Unfortunately, my dining experience wasn't that great. We arrived on time for our reservation, where we were pleasantly greeted and ushered to our table. We were provided with menus and our drinks order was taken - Sue had a Pimms and Lemonade and, as I was driving, I ordered a pint of Bitter shandy. Bearing in mind that this was a Wednesday evening and it wasn't busy [no more than a quarter of the tables were in use at any one time - if that], but I thought it took them a little longer than I would have expected to bring our drinks to the table. Sue's drink was fine, but I had been poured a full pint of Bitter [without the lemonade]. So I had to wait a little longer for the correct drink I had ordered, which when it came was fine. The table we had been allocated was not in the best condition, in that about half of the original varnish had gone, leaving the bare wood on show. The tables surface had not been wiped clean at all since being used by the previous party, as the surface was a little tacky and there was salt scattered all over the table with a little pile of it under the candle holder. Numerous amounts of cutlery were loosely provided, where they were openly stood on their ends in a container on the tables with no protection from any previous parties attentions. For our main meal we both ordered the Sirloin Steak. Sue had the full works with her stake and I ordered mine with a simple chips and garden peas with a Peppercorn sauce. Again, we had to wait quite a lot longer than one would have expected. When the meal did arrive, Sue's was fine but my steak came with just the chips only and no peas, so I had a further wait for my garden peas to arrive, and the Peppercorn sauce temperature was only tepid and, what I would describe as 'jellified'. So-much-so that it wouldn't pour/run from the little jug it came in, but I had to pull it out with my knife. All-in-all I was very disappointed, and I can't in all honesty recommend this pub. Needless to say, we won't be going back...
Read more... Friendly staff but table service slow . Delivery of food between courses very long winded and slow to arrive. One member of our party had a cold starter served and it had to be returned to the kitchen ,the replacement did not arrive until after everyone else had finished leaving this guest feeling awkward. The mains took an extremely long time to arrive and when they did they arrived lukewarm and the meat was not pleasant and the mains were hardly touched by any off us . When it came to the desert ,again one member of the party was left with no desert being served at the same time as the rest of the party and there was a long wait for their desert to arrive . This wait was on top of the long wait in between courses . In total it took nearly 2 and half hours for our food to arrive from our being seated and the desert being finished at least an hour and forty five mins of that was waiting for food to arrive . Although the pub looks pleasant and feels friendly and the atmosphere seems good. Such poor service time and poor quality food means we are unlikely to return there for food again . Which is a shame as the staff we did encounter all seemed pleasant and friendly. The building itself is inviting ,although the toilets could do with a good clean especially around the walls and floor area. It is close to the water and the grounds outside are inviting , any future visits will be for a drink only . We spent over £150 on food and drink and I can honestly say it was not well spent. For the food quality we would have been better of with a lukewarm burger from McDonald’s or a kfc family bucket as it would have been more edible . Shame as the pub does have a pleasant atmosphere with what seems to be a good...
