We travel around the country weekly with work. Sometimes 1 night , Sometimes 2 weeks . We usually book a premier inn. You can't go wrong .
Working only 5 mins away from the highlander it made sense to stay here . After arriving and being greeted by the manager and her dog .
I got my key and was told the rooms had been recently refurbished. Great . Off to my room. The rooms were dated... late 70s at a guess . There was an old wireless bolted to the wall. I think the last time it was used was when Churchill declared the start of the first world war. There had been a new bit of worktop in the bathroom. Shower seals all discoloured. Walls had been painted but lots of rawlpug holes and rough around the edges . OK. Off to dinner.
It seems they cater mostly for the elderly and coach trips . The food was expensive for what it was . And cooked to destruction. Oh well. It was a holiday for my teeth . The old folkes were in their element. £8 for a glass of wine and £7.60 for a Guinness you can imagine i only ate here one night .
The rest of my stay i ate at another hotel further down the road . No names but it was 110% . fresh local food. Great staff and atmosphere. Wish I'd of had the week there looking back .
The rooms were loud . A lot of people banging around all night . Most likely renovating their own rooms or at least finishing off the work already started . Above me were two dogs running around the corridor all night and the sound of a running tap until 3am.
But again . If your in your 80s and relying on your hearing aids.. it must have been a peaceful night .
Up nice and early to find breakfast opens at half 7 . We waited . Welcomed in to our table. Coffee was ok. Ordered a full breakfast. It turned up on a side plate sized plate about 8 inches with sausage. Half a piece of bacon. Soaking wet egg . A spoon of beans and a couple of cold toasts . I dried my plate with a few tissues and ate my delightful meal.
There was of course a continental table. Porridge and cornflakes. Mobbed by the elderly fighting over the prunes and all bran. There was not much butter and jam but so much marmalade even Paddington would of felt sick.
After that . I'd had enough I phoned and booked a table for the rest of the week for the hotel down the road . Where funnily enough most of the staff go there after work . I think that says it all.
So all in all. If you are deaf and have lost most of your teeth and have recently remortgaged your house . You can eat and drink here happily. ...
Read moreMy stay was as part of a coach party and as we drew up to hotel, I thought it looked rather shabby and in need of some repairs and decoration. My room was on the ground floor and faced the main road and pavement. There are no net curtains or blinds at the window, so I had to draw the curtains for privacy. The bathroom was windowless and the extractor in the ceiling (although it might just have been a vent) did not come on when the light was switched on , nor was there any visible sign of a switch for it, therefore there was no steam extraction in the bathroom area. The shower was too hot, scalding, and when I reported this, I was told someone would check it. However it remained too hot during my stay. |The room only had an open short hanging space, with two shelves over, both had extra duvet/bedding and I had to put one on the floor to make room for some of my clothes. There was no drawer space in the bedside units, only a shelf, so I had to leave my underwear etc in my case. |I noticed on the Friday evening, as I arrived, that there were several large canvas bags containing used laundry left in a ‘lobby’ area near to the corridor where my room was. I did speak to a member of staff about these bags of laundry, which were not only unsightly, but also were a fire hazzard, and was told that this was temporary (Friday to Sunday morning temporary?) These bags (about 20) of laundry had eventually been removed by Monday morning but possibly only after our tour manager had also spoken to hotel staff and expressed her concern about them being a fire hazzard.|There were 4 choices of main courses for the evening meal, but myself and fellow guests were doubtful as to whether they had been cooked fresh on the premises. Most likely the main elements of the meal were cooked elsewhere, vacuum packed and reheated. Adequate portion sizes for both starters and mains and the pudding trolley was to die for, very good selection and good portion sizes.||The restaurant staff were all very pleasant.||I would hope that the hotel management will take this as constructive criticism that can mostly be...
Read moreWe have just had the most friendliest, welcoming night here at the highlander hotel with our dog Narla. I booked it for one night as we are travelling up to Nairn for a week and even though we usually do the drive in one go from South Lanarkshire i thought an over night would be nice. The price was on booking.com and i did read through the reviews. Well here is my review. The highlander is easy to find through the village road plenty of parking. I checked in at reception and rang the bell, the first lady who greeted me was so welcoming and friendly. Check in was easy and i felt like it was more personal like back in the day.. not like your holiday inn's where your just a number. The hotel is dog friendly an that speaks volumes throughout the hotel and staff. I booked a table for the evening which was assured would be okay for our dog. We located our room, the hotel is split in to 3 buildings but easy to navigate. I called back at reception few mins after as there was only one bath towel and a different lady was at reception and again so friendly and welcoming. She left a towel out for us while we were walking the dog and i happened to ask her about walks.. i was given a map and so many choices... (this lady was happy to see a Norweigian elkhound) The walk we took was amazing and an hour and 40 minutes later we returned to our room. When we went back through reception again lovely staff happy to see Narla. ( she was spoilt with affection) We were sat in the bar area and it was an outstanding meal. Sweet potato and corriander soup to start, then i had the burger which was so delicious and my husband had the steak pie. Such a lovely meal. This morning breakfast was traditional to perfection. With staff attending the table (again another lovely lady) Our room was small but enough for the 2 of us and a dog as we only slept in it. The room was clean and tidy, yeah the decor throughout may have chips and scuffs but that aside nothing takes away the lovely warmth and friendliness of this hotel and its staff. We have said we will call again to the village and its beautiful walks and...
