When you walk in, look around at the decor and menu, the similarity with Sticks n Sushi is uncanny, but thatâs where it ends.
The sake is over priced and underwhelming. Poor choice if you know what youâre looking for and for newbies, I donât see anyone ordering seconds. ÂŁ15-20 for 125ml is not good value, (ÂŁ9 ish in London) and for a couple, you would easily want around 750ml (ish) to enjoy during the meal.
The sashimi was served slightly below the room temp, which was about 22*C, so had obviously been left out in the kitchen too long. The bowl of ice it was served on clearly for decoration and the point of it being clearly lost on the chef preparing it.
The prawn sashimi used in the nigiri and sashimi mix plate was cheap and made me think it was not prepared on site (looked like a piece of shrimp from a Tesco sushi snack, tasted like it too)
The lamb rack was perfectly cooked but personally I think had too much teriyaki sauce on it, personal preference so wouldnât knock it for that, the 4 mayos were ok, but again, I think it was flavoured mayo and the mayo wasnât made on site from scratch.
Tempura shrimp were very nice, thatâs where the single star was earned.
Gyoza and the Bao bun were fine, nothing wrong with them, but itâs a shame that ânothing wrong with themâis the best compliment I can give
The sushi rolls, what can I say, I tried one piece of each that came out and my reply to my partner was, the middle one is the least revolting. It was so bad she expelled her piece into her napkin. I chewed each one like it was a Bon Bon, cautiously, nervously and expecting at any moment to break a tooth. We sent them all back. They were all tempura coated rolls but served cold and so the tempura had gone soggy and hence chewy.
Staff were nice and no issue. Service was below par, no one asked us if we wanted another drink at any point, in fact they all stayed away, including the manager, after we returned the sushi rolls. I could see the chef looking arguing with the waiter when we returned them.
I really do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Itâs truly an awful example of Japanese fusion or just Japanese food in general. I donât believe for a moment the chef and cooks in the kitchen are properly trained itamea chefs. It is outrageously overpriced for the standard...
Read moreBelow-average food at above-average prices, finished with poor service and illegal practices.
We ordered cocktails, a vegan platter, a chicken katsu curry and a ginger and garlic grilled chicken.
The drinks were fine, although it took a while for our order to be taken. We had to catch the eye of a staff member to take them.
But the food was where we were really let down. The vegan platter was ok, the katsu curry was bland, but the ginger and garlic grilled chicken was the biggest disappointment. It was tasteless and lacked any flavour or spice. This was despite the dish being pictured on the menu with red chilli slices. But there were none served with my dish.
So I sent it back, explaining it lacked flavour and did not have chilli's as pictured. But the waitress (I presume the manager) informed me the chilli was in the marinade. But I found that hard to believe as the dish really did taste of nothing.
She offered to deduct our first round of drinks from the bill, at which point I clarified if that meant I would be paying for the chicken. I would, she replied, as I had eaten 'most' of it and it was as the chef intended. If it was as the chef intended - why was it served different to how it was pictured - I asked. I refused to pay for it.
Our bill then arrived. I'd like to say this was where the unpleasant experience ended.
Not quite.
The chicken had been removed, but then the surprise - an attempt to overcharge us for our drinks. I've included photos for evidence. There was no warning given at any point during our meal that the drinks prices had been increased beyond those stated in the menus. To charge more than advertised is illegal.
After escalating this to another manager (the original one had disappeared at this point), we finally had the bill rectified and were pleasantly surprised that our drinks had been taken off.
Save your money and...
Read moreThird and last visit and each has got worse. Service is decent and attentive, restaurant interior and location is lovely, but the food is very questionable. I can hardly believe that any of the chefs has cooked in Asia, as the food bears little resemblance to the many iconic dishes that is typical of the region. The only dish we have found that is close to authentic is the sashimi which is decent ( but then itâs not cooked so little to screw up). The skewered dishes are all immersed in a horrible sweet syrupy sauce which is vomit inducing. No where in Asia except perhaps the Philippines is food served in this way. Itâs quite disgusting, but it also disguises the food taste - which may be the objective. When you scrape off the sauce which covers the meat entirely ( the kitchen obviously dip the cooked skewered food into a bucket of this slop before plating) instead of revealing a slightly charred juicy morsel, you are met with grey uninspiring meat which all looks the same no matter itâs beef, lamb or whatever. Whatâs worse, it arrives at the table lukewarm not piping hot and appetising ( dipping into cold sauce??) the salmon skewer is like cardboard slathered in this sickly sweet sauce and so overcooked I doubt the cat would even lick it. The rice is inedible, disgusting was the popular word used in our group. The tempura was probably the best of the cooked dishes, but even this has batter slightly underdone inside but still with a crispy outer, ( batter mix most likely too thick). Quite frankly I feel for the guests who have little exposure to genuine Asian food and are going to think that this sad but expensive offering is the peak of Asian inspired gastronomy. Should we ever have to eat at this establishment again, it will be the sashimi and...
