A lovely place to visit in beautiful surroundings. Everything is expensive though from the food to the items on sale such as candles and sauces and chutneys made on their estate. I have no doubt that they're lovely but during a cost of living crisis it's hard to justify £15 for a candle or £4.50 for a jar of sauce. Like a lot of places in the Lakes District, it's a tourist trap. However it's a great place to visit for families as they have loads of alpacas and Herdwick sheep which are absolutely adorable.
There's also a nice walk to the shore and to the start of catbells mountain, we wanted to climb it but it was too long and too high, maybe next time. We had the Lingholm full English breakfasts when we visited, I'd say they were nice but not the nicest breakfast I've ever had. I didn't like the house beans, I get that it's like an artisan breakfast and not a greasy spoon but I'd rather just have normal baked beans. The Cumberland sausage was definitely the best thing about it, it was the best I've had! It was clear the all of the ingredients were locally sourced. I have to say though that the slices of sourdough bread that came with it were awful as it was very hard and chewy. Again, I would have just preferred a couple of slices of standard thick white bloomer.
However it wasn't a greasy breakfast at all which is good and I like how dogs can sit in the restaurant, it's a lovely light and airy place to visit and have breakfast and we will definitely go back but I wouldn't have the breakfast again. Unfortunately I have to deduct a star because really it could have been better and it was expensive at £11.95 each! Overall, great for families and a beautiful place to visit but the food appears to be slightly lacking. There are nicer breakfasts to be...
Read moreWhat a spot! Ashamed to say, we live just 40 mins from here and just had our first visit to the kitchen today. The beautiful setting and buildings instantly wow.
One of my niggles with eateries is when you're left trying to work out if it's seat-yourself and order-at-till. None of that here. Clear signage telling us to wait for a greeter who'd seat us and signs advising it's card only payment and table service. Great start - they've thought of the customer journey.
The food is very impressive. Fresh and innovative and whilst to some (my husband!), the menu may read a little fancy, this is good, honest, professionally cooked, fresh food at its best. We had the special (a southern fried chicken, which was excellent), but we will be back very soon to try the main menu now that we know the standards. What sets this place apart though, is its staff. Very impressive, attentive, personal and genuinely interactive - from the greeter who was incredibly welcoming, to the person who took/served our order and the person who cleared our table. Hugely dog friendly (not just tolerant!) but I felt there was also plenty of space for those that dont want to be near them too. What a gem and what high standards. Our new favourite...
Read moreIt's an absolutely wonderful location but I felt the food let it down a bit. It was rather expensive for what it was and we did not think any of our dishes were particularly great. We had the burger and I had a garden special of onion souffle and carrots, which was a complete unbalanced dish, everything tasted the same and was not well seasoned or at all interesting. It needed a sharp contrast like a chutney at the very least or something pickled. The rest of the group had the burger and were disappointed too. Again, rather bland, with a not particularly nice sauce and cost 16.50. We had much better elsewhere for less. Next time I would only have the cakes and coffee, which were both lovely. Highly recommend the lemon merengue but the peanut flapjack was too sickly. There is definitely room for improvement. The service was very good howevere and we did not have to wait long...
