I visited the Yorkshire Dales Brewery in Askrigg on 14th June 2018, and due to an argument between the map on my phone and the Satnav, we used local knowledge and asked a convenient helpful motorist, who was happy to provide directions.
The brewery is very busy, and (contrary to the out of date leaflet we were relying on for information), they don't do tours or tastings. This isn't all bad news. Firstly, Rob, who runs the brewery with his wife, was very happy to give us an informal tour of the operation, and explain everything - from what's currently fermenting in the big vats to the different types of hops and malt used.
Secondly, whilst they originally set up a small bar area to provide tastings and, subsequently, full pints of the brews, they don't do this now since the pubs in the village are all now supporting the brewery by selling their ales of draft, and they don't want to provide extra competition. Not a problem. We just went to the local pub and sampled an ale there instead, which was a great find in itself, since it was the very pub used in the 70s BBC series "All Creatures Great And Small". Lovely.
I had done my research and was at the brewery to invest in some Muker Silver, a crisp pilsner using real German hops. My father in law was looking to sample some IPA, so we organised an economic box of 12 bottles for £28 - my nine bottles of Muker and his three bottles of IPA
It was a splendid little trip out over the moor from Lawn House (where we were staying!), and I would certainly recommend it for all those who are in the area, enjoy the taste of a brew made with care instead of churned out by the lorry load, and believe in supporting local breweries who want to bring quality, art, and craftsmanship...
Read morei've been coming to Wensleydale with my wife for more than 30 years, mainly renting a cottage just outside of Askrigg. We have dined and had drinks for many years at the White Rose Hotel in Askrigg ( Now regrettably under new ownership and called the Middle House!!!!) The proprietors were the late Richard and Susan Atkinson, whom we got to know well. on one occasion I asked Richard why he was not selling ales from the Askrigg Brewery. He told me that he had approached someone from the management there, who had actually cursed and swore at him, and told him that they were more interested in selling to bigger customers than them. Anyone from Askrigg Breweries going to leave an...

Purchased several cases for my micropub through a distributor. At no fault of the brewery the distributor’s courier didn’t collect from them as told. Was called by Yorkshire Dales and informed of the delay which I thought was very decent of them.
Order arrived, well packaged and spot on. They also sent an additional case free of charge which was totally unnecessary but really appreciated.
In this current climate touches like that really go a long way and restores your faith in a trade which is being very cut throat at the moment.
Look forwards to getting some casks down here soon!...
