Carlo's Trattoria — Restaurant in Guildford

Was staying locally and decided to give Carlo's a go based on other reviews, but despite the service being pleasant and attentive, I must be honest and say that the food was intensely disappointing and over-priced.

Upon reflection I wish we'd sent the calamari back, it was practically inedible: bland, tasteless, lacking in any coating, rubbery and weirdly 'wet', and I spent the rest of the night wondering if the two thirds of the portion I'd struggled down, was actually going to make me ill. Husband felt exactly the same about his.

My main course of Linguine Carbonara was fine, but my husband's Veal main was drowned in an overbearing sauce with a solitary spear of asparagus alongside a soft pomme puree.

The zuchinni fritti were soggy and the courgettes tasted 'old'. Again lacking seasoning.

This was food for an older clientelle - everything very soft and unseasoned and judging by the rest of the diners who arrived during the evening, this was definitely the demographic Carlo's caters to.

For a two starters and mains, plus two soft drinks, we paid close to £90 including the already added tip. Absolutely not worth it. I regret to say I won't be recommending Carlo's to anyone as there are much better Italian restaurants to enjoy...

A half decent meal with my Spanish girlfriend was totally ruined by an obnoxious, cocky waiter who slimed up to the table then immediately offended me by saying that English people were not capable of learning a foreign language. He then carried on to speak at length in Spanish to my girlfriend (I happen to speak a little Spanish so understood). He then carried on to offend me until my blood boiled. I had to wait for him to walk away before I had an opportunity to leave the table to avoid embarrassing my girlfriend, then call him over to a less public position and tell him how offensive I found his behaviour, advised him using a few choice words, never to do it again. His response was to excacerbate the situation by smirking at me.

Never in my entire life have I come so close to punching someone in a restaurant. Our evening was totally ruined. I went home in a foul mood, shaking with anger.

My advice to others? Give this one a miss especially if you are on a date. Needless to say my feet will never cross the...

Went to celebrate our anniversary, it's a lovely looking restaurant, but a bit too brightly lit, and there was a bulb constantly flickering in a wall lamp, which would have driven me crazy if I had to sit under it! We may have got unlucky with the food choices but our starter - a mixed seafood sharing dish - was far too large a portion for a starter, and too heavily battered. We left a lot My main was nice enough but my husband's lamb main was so tough he found it difficult to eat, and left a lot of it behind. I think they were short staffed that night and had a large party in, so there was a longish wait. The waitress we had was charming. The restaurant owner then cleared our plates in a hurry, without asking if everything had been ok or enquiring about the left food, so we didn't get the opportunity to let him know about the inedible lamb, we just paid the pretty expensive bill and left but I don't think we'll go back. Such a shame as my last experience at this restaurant several years...
