Paklock — Restaurant in Harlow

I lived in Harlow for 3.5 years and all the years I did, I went to another Chinese high end restaurant in Old Harlow which I was extremely happy with, but a neighbour recommended Paklock and so did an estate agent (guess should have known better from that). "Food is so good", they said. "It's cheap", they said. "Decor is so 70s but it's an institution". So the week before I moved out of the area I took myself along to get a takeaway (they don't deliver) and ordered, I mentioned to them that I have never ordered from them but hear it's good. "best in 'arlow" some lady overhearing me piped up. "that's good" I said and sat down waiting. Got home, tucked in, was really nice. Not Zenz (oops there I just gave away my favourite Chinese takeaway) good but it would do. My other half finished his food and I'm looking at his plate, what do I see, two black clearly not ours - HAIRS. What the £!?# I said to him is that a hair? He said "hairS yes". I said "oooooh nooooo" i felt so bad. Thing is, what do you do in this situation. You may say take it back but really, I lived in Church Langley (not exactly round the corner) and realistically are they going to take ownership for a hair? What are they going to do? And I really don't want free food. Gosh no. Plus I was leaving. So I swore quietly and thought TRUST YOUR OWN INSTINCTS CLAIRE. THIS is why I don't go to places that have less than 4/5 food hygiene rating and Paklock is 3/5. Just don't so it! Cheap Chinese food is not a selling point. What a shame... (and an awful...

Very nice meal here today. Although I've been coming here since 1970, this was the first time under the new management & since they reopened on November 2, 2022. The outside & inside has had a needed makeover paint wise & it's very nicely set out. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary so a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc was the first thing ordered & it went down pretty well! Wifey had salt & pepper ribs while I tried the barbeque ribs in bar-b-q sauce. This was followed up by chicken in garlic & a plain chow mein for wifey & I had the chicken chow mein. Would actually never return to this place. Staff are rude. Food is far to salty and small portions and they don’t like giving you fresh cutlery A ready meal from a supermarket would be better. The shredded duck was not shredded it was like mash. Vile I really don’t understand how people are rating this place anything higher than a one star !!!
