First time visiting this Toby carvery and I can safely say I will never be returning..... We arrived at 20:30ish for Sunday roast, yes it closed at 10pm but with an hour and half left of service you would have thought they'd still have a decent selection of food. Meat was dry and fatty to the point we changed one of our meal to a vegetarian because my wife couldn't eat it. The only day of the week for lamb and they had a tiny bit left which was dry and rubbery, I asked if there was any more and was told they hadn't cooked anymore yet did bring out a freshly cooked gammon which I can get 7 days a week so was a little disappointed. Vegetable section was absolutely flithy, clearly hadn't been cleaned for awhile with bits of different vegetables dropped and squashed all over the hot plate and looked like some bits had been sat under the hot light for hours.
As for the people who work there not one of them seemed to have any customer service experience, walking around shouting across tables at each other, sitting down at random empty tables for a few minutes before returning to just have a chat in the corner, manger was just as bad. 21:20pm arrived and the kitchen sounded like they was having a rave, music blaring and no consideration for any customers trying to sit, eat and relax!
I honestly nearly walked out without paying because no one seemed to care about taking my payment to the point I had find the manger after asking to pay twice already.... when I found the manger the other staff where to busy having a chat with eachother or filling up their plates of food for after their shift.... very unprofessional considering none of them where on break.
This was not a Toby carvery it was more like a half way house social club.
It should not matter whether you arrive at 1pm or 9pm the standard of food and service should remain the same and unfortunately this place did not deliver!
Catering and hospitality critics are real people who look just like normal customers, just like me.

Read moreLong post.... Very disappointed overall with Borehamwood Toby Calvary yesterday. Felt as though our business was not wanted , simply because we booked for late dinner. I think their primary business is hotel guests., not guests who come from outside. Food was quality was poor, very measly portions of meat for adults in terms of what we were served by the meat carver. (Maybe because they kept saying they are closing up, soon, so we were very rushed we felt ,we got left over cold food ).
My question is -why the online reservation system , should let one book, so close to their closing time? Better not to allow guest to book online rather than arriving to be told restaurant is closing service in 15 mins !!! In fact on the portal there was an option of booking for 8:50 pm. Yet they clear the tables /food at 9:00 pm. So you arrive expecting a nice chilled evening only to be rushed and be asked to pay , even when you have barely sat to eat your food...
No Mac and cheese, which is what the kids love what we found was hard , dry no sauce and barely any, when we asked for some fresh more for the kids ,we were told kitchen was closing. No dessert . Nothing , asked to pay the bill just as we started eating. Basically we felt very unwelcome : sadly we don't intend to come back to Toby Calvary Borehamwood any time soon . Sorry ,but that's how we felt after our experience last night. I feel the manager could have handled things a little better.
Please improve customer service, experience, a little empathy to those who come late ( or change your Online booking system) so it doesn't allow any booking at least 30-45 mins before you...
