UPDATE 06/10/23: Visted tonight and now a Pint Of Tribute is £5:45
UPDATE 04/11/23: Was arrived at 7.30 with the view of ordering some food. Was told that it was not possible as I had not pre-booked. Very few people in the restaurant so do not understand why this is. Being my local is feeling very distant.
Red Lion, Ashington... Situated in a nice location about 10 miles South of Horsham and 15 mins drive to Worthing. This is my third time here having moved, literally just 5 mins walk.
There is a good size car park. Outside looking towards the pub, there is plenty of spaces to sit and the outside furniture is comfortable.
What makes a good atmosphere is seeing parents with their children enjoying family time. This is nice to see that the Red Lion is promoting a family atmosphere.
I did place a food order and was impressed how nice steak was. From a value point of view, i would not say its the most expensive but it is not cheap but life and the cost of living has increased and that does reflect in what you pay for.
If you are like me, I do like nobike apps where you can order food or drinks. At the time of leaving this review, you could only order drinks via the app. On your table, should be a (bar code) where you point your camera to and you will be directed to place your order. What was a little frustrating, the bar code which is a small piece of paper was vacant from my table and other tables around. Not a problem asking a member if staff but would like to see the tables being checked to make sure this code is on all the tables.
I ordered by drink via the app and the wait time was quick. I would say, it is quicker then waiting at the bar to get served
My two issues: Beer has generally gone up. £5.20 is expensive. I would expect to see these prices in London. Again, supply & demand and a better deal for the pub would and should always be the motive
Last issue: Be nice if you could order food using the app.
Apart from that, staff were friendly, if you have a fury friend, they are welcomed. Definitely will be going back to see if anything...
Read moreVery disappointed! It’s been four years since we last visited the red lion and I was so looking forward to going back after our last experience. We were staying in the area and chose the red lion for a wedding anniversary meal, thinking it would be a good excuse to return. Although the staff were pleasant and friendly, the service was hit and miss. Yes it was a busy Saturday evening but only two servers and we did wait quite a long time for both our drinks and our food. The main issue I have is that I asked for chorizo to be removed from one of the dishes as I am a pescatarian. I asked if a substitute could be made, maybe a vegetable or whatever they suggested, but the waitress said we can take things out but we can’t put anything back in. I suggested that maybe she asked if that was possible, but she repeated that it wasn’t possible which I felt was very inflexible considering the prices! We both enjoyed our starters but my main dish was totally bland without any flavour and any kind of sauce whatsoever. It was a linguine with king prawns and small pieces of tomato, but there seemed to be nothing else in the dish, making it dry, boring and certainly not worth the money. I felt that I could knock something up 100 times better in my kitchen and not have to pay £16 plus for it! We were also not impressed with the vegan millionaires slice for pudding. Again, no real flavour, just a plate of pure sugar. Our meal came to £105 and we only had three alcoholic drinks. Very expensive, we felt, for mediocre food. Still a beautiful looking pub from the outside but things seem to have slipped at the red lion which...
Read moreAfter being let down by the restaurant we had book in for lunch originally we were on the hunt for a last minute Roast Dinner at 1.30pm on Sunday. I just want to take a moment to rave about the roast dinner at The Red Lion in Ashington where we went instead.
We had the trio of meat, and a side of cauliflower cheese (not photographed but the best cauli-cheese I can buy) everything was amazing although I would prefer a few more than 4 and if the potatoes weren’t the first thing put on the plate as they soak up everything so quick with meat, veg and gravy on top that they lose a bit of crispyness but I’ll just try and remember that next time and request them on the side. (This usually comes with bread sauce which isn’t photographed as I don’t like it, and a big ball of stuffing wrapped in bacon that was removed from my plate by my partner before I could take the photo as I can’t eat stuffing due to an allergy, leaving just a gap and edge of the plate gravy splatter to remember it by).
Service was great, atmosphere lovely. We couldn’t finish it so they gave us a pot to take back for the dogs. It is dog friendly and for a normal meal I have taken the dogs but when you have Labradors and a room full of roasts the eyes of “starvation” from Labradors are too much guilt for a room to manage! £21.75 for the trio of meat (pork, beef and chicken with a piece of crackling) but cheaper options for solo meat choice, although next time I want the duo of beef instead as it was the best meat on my plate).
Roast 9/10 Cauli-cheese 10/10
Will definitely...
