I drove 85 miles to eat here after finding by accident last year.. Last year, the food was amazing.. So a journey of 85 miles, in my opinion was worth it.. Unfortunately, this visit was not so good... I ordered chicken soft tacos just like last time, but they where basically onion tacos.. Far too many onions, far too many. Not enough chicken or anything else that could compete with the onions.. All I could taste was, onions... The second worst tacos I've ever had... Also, the staff, some basically ignored us. Which was not expected.. Last year, our visit was so good in comparison to this year...
"Edit to review after message from Mexicali on my Instagram instead of a visible response on here......"
I was corrected, I described the "spring onions" as "onions" Therefore my taco where full of "spring onions"... Far too many in my opinion..
The reply I received back from mexicali was not so much an apologetic one, but more one with attitude... I did plan on visiting again in the hope of a better meal and experience, but after contact from them, I thing I'll leave it.. Now 1 star review after poor customer service
Now second edit due to more very unprofessional messages form the actual owner....... I highly recommended not to eat here as the owner has such an attitude and he feels he provides a excellent service to everyone, but when someone leaves a medium review, starts arguing with them and that review goes to a bad review... Also complained about the eyes I left, calling it vandalism.. I'm sorry, I do normally remove them, I do sometimes forget... Ian, the owner does not like criticism or have a sense of humour..... Very disappointing argumentative, response with attitude.... #DontBeLikeIanFromHolmfirth
Third edit... 😏😒
I left 2 eyes on to make one face. The evidence is in my photos, apparently I left them all over the restaurant according to Ian the owner, showing the owner also likes to tell little lies, on the Internet where people can see.... 👀
Honestly the response I've had is not positive in anyway.. Every response from the owner has made the situation worse... I just said the tacos had too many onions.... Maybe that should have been taken on board and reviewed the taco recipe, but no, the response was to get a bit moody about me being critical....
Calling me a vandal for making one face with googly eyes on a mark on a wall I found, saying I'm now being a troll for writing a Google review....
The Googly Eye Challenge is just for fun to make people smile or maybe laugh in difficult times.... But Ian the owner at Mexicali Holmfirth, does not like this, obviously not a happy person with a sense of humour ... Complains and makes out I put eyes all over his restaurant, a complete lie.... What else does he lie about..

Read moreGreat food, fantastic staff, impressive atmosphere.
I was really impressed, The food was really well cooked, presented and carried the Mexican (day of the dead), with a sprinkle of TexMex/ US vibe really well. Although a few dishes are obtainable an franchises such as Taco bell, the standard here is far superior. Food prices were on the money. Alcohol is probably on the high side, but this is not a pub.
The staff were incredibly efficient, attentive and friendly. The atmosphere vibrant with multiple parties of 2 to 10 easily catered for. It was great to see a really wide range of generations enjoying themselves, reflecting the locations appeal. Note this is not, nor should it be a quiet cosy place, it is as it should be salsa!!!
The resuturant is on 2 floors, with the upper the main area. At the time of visiting the ground floor was only being used for payment and a takeaway area. This, I expect, changes during the summer period when there are more patrons.
Access for the mobility impaired is good, for those confined to a wheelchair access is good to the ground floor only. As far as I could see there are only able bodied toilets (grd floor) and no lift. Therefore, when we visited a wheelchair user would have been able to get good service and great food but little of the first floor atmosphere. But as I've said that will likely change seasonally. It was cold and wet we visited, a standard Yorkshire Spring evening.
I definitely recommend this place and it's food for all ages and...
Read moreWe visited for the 4th or 5th time at the weekend and we were very disappointed in the service and not overly impressed with the quality of the food either. We had nachos to start but they took a while to come out, we'd been there an hour already by the time we finished our starters. Mains took a while to come out, with two mains brought out first and the rest followed a good 10-15 minutes later, by which time the first two had almost finished their meal. There was no mention of a delay or that meals would be coming out when ready, I wouldn't have minded so much if this was mentioned. We did also have to ask where the other meals were and they said they'd 'go and find out'. It wasn't even very busy when we were there so unsure of why the service was poor. The food wasn't overly hot when it came out and the soft tacos I had with shredded chicken were covered in sweet chilli (not advertised as that on the menu), so I didn't really enjoy them. Didn't taste very mexican style at all. Empty glasses and bottles were often on the table and waiter/waitresses came over to deliver food etc and didn't take them away. The final annoyance was that we were given the wrong bill so had to ask for them to print ours. You have to pay downstairs and it was so busy with groups of people that you had to force your way to the bar to pay. Most of the staff didn't seem very bothered about our custom. Unlikely to be returning anytime soon unfortunately due to the...
