Excellent - Recommended. I had their beef Sunday roast, although pork was also available. Everything was perfectly cooked especially the lean and tender beef. I am diabetic so they agreed to limit roast potatoes to less than normal, omit Yorkshire and carrots. I forgot to mention mash so that came and I tried a mouthful it was very good. Vegetables were cauliflower cheese, cabbage, green beans and if I had included them carrots all fresh and nicely cooked. The gravy was very flavoursome and not over thickened. I love gravy asking for extra when I ordered. A full gravy boat was served! The only condiment I wanted was horseradish which arrived in a pot and not those fiddlesome sachets. The whole experience was somewhere between the best of home cooking and a first rate restaurant 😊 My friend joined me but had his boxed to take home as he has timed dietary needs so I didn't see the full roast but he said portions were very good and the yorkshires proper yorkshires not the small frozen ones! On the basis that my diabetically reduced meal was still a filling adults meal I can believe the full portions would satisfy everyone. Price was good. I think £9.95 but I was concentrating more on the delicious food. Oh there is plenty of outside seating half of which is under cover. I am going to be eating here at least once a week and trying their brunch which unlike many places doesn't end at 11 a.m. but runs all day. As a diabetic if I limit chips and beans brunch is lower carbs. Sorry this is so long but I have been disappointed at so many pubs and restaurants. I have only found one other good roast in town and that is £12. On overall quality the King is the better....
Read moreThe landlord and staff are friendly (apart from the bouncer who barged straight past me in the doorway without saying a word) but this seems like one of those "locals only" pubs where the presence of anyone who doesn't come in there regularly won't be appreciated by the regulars.
As soon as I walked in, everyone turned round, looking at me like "Who the ** are you?!" I was meeting a friend here for a meal so sat down at a table with my drink, but the people at the table opposite kept gawping at me.
This made me feel really uncomfortable and frankly unwelcome, so I hurried my drink down and when my mate arrived, I quickly said "Let's go somewhere else" so we hopped in the car and did, to somewhere with much friendlier clientele and had a lovely evening.
My friend who lives locally said this pub has a rough history of troublemakers from the neighbouring estates, which partly explained the atmosphere. Even though they've rebranded and had a refurb it seems there are still problems here and reading some of the other reviews, it appears that others have felt the same way.
No disrespect to the landlord or his staff, as I said, they're friendly enough (not sure about that bouncer though) but he's clearly still got some work to do, if he wants to attract new customers that will feel welcome and want to stay and...
Read moreMyself and a friend visited on Saturday for the first time since the pandemic started. We were so glad we did, the staff were very welcoming, the pub was extremely clean, fresh, bright and well decorated ready for Halloween. The food we ordered was well cooked and presented, it tasted fantastic too. We struggled to find any fault, the only thing we could think of was the was too many chips for us personally. The gammon was cooked exactly as we asked and service was very prompt. Desserts were to die for, again served quickly and presented well. Surprisingly impressed much better than the previous visits we have had there. We'll...
