Firstly can't fault the staff and the reception. No hanging around and we were shown to our table quickly and pleasantly. The restaurant itself is well decorated and the tables and cutlery all appeared clean, which is always a good start!
Also have to say the waitress wasn't at all pushy and was quite happy to give us extra time to make our dining choice, though that said it was a Friday night so whether that would have been the case on a Saturday evening I'm not sure.
But that's where it starts to go down hill somewhat...
The starters are huge. I had (so-called) Dutch Style Chips which in reality was a very big King Edward spud sliced length-ways in four, times two. The chunky fries were also covered in a rather non-descript cheese sauce, which for those in the know, isn't traditional Dutch style chips - they're eaten with mayonnaise.
My wife opted for Garlic Bread which turned out to be a 9" pizza, which was again too bland and too big. The bright side was the King Scallops that my son ordered which he advises me, were really rather good, though for £9 they should be!
Main courses were delivered within a reasonable time after starters. My wife and I opted for Tagliatelle al Pollo (chicken), whilst my son went for the seafood risotto. The risotto was big (can't argue with the portion sizes) and had plenty of prawns and muscles etc... However the tagliatelle was poor. The chicken was small and dry and the pasta was overcooked. There was no seasoning at all and the sauce was again very bland.
Now this might not normally be a major issue, after all putting it in context Salute is part of a pub in a small town, not a major West End Michelin Starred restaurant, until you look at the bill
Our three-course meal (which if you take out the scallops and the risotto was in effect two big spuds, a 9" pizza and two bowls of pasta) set us back a whopping £90
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to pay good money for a good experience but the general menu fare isn't in that bracket.
Go for the ambience and the welcoming staff, but be aware of what you're ordering and how much it's...
Read moreWe booked a meal for a week last Thursday. When we arrived we were greeted by a very pleasant member of staff, unfortunately they were very busy, our table was not ready they apologised and suggested we order a drink at the bar whilst we waited which should be about 15 minutes. To my surprise, they were crack-on, and we were seated by another very pleasant staff member. We ordered our starter and mains, which we both thoroughly loved. My wife had the sea bass sitting on crushed new potatoes she said it was equally the best dish she has ever had anywhere. That is a big compliment bearing in mind how fussy she can be. We had a lovely night out and although the restaurant was very busy, we were not rushed. There was a reasonable gap between starters and main just perfect for us to appreciate the bottle of wine we had ordered with the meal. We were asked if we would like a sweet by another helpful and pleasant member of staff, but to be honest, the servings were generous. We were full and could not manage a sweet. We had a great night out with a lovely meal and looked after by polite, helpful and professional staff. Well done, Salute at the White Swan, we will definitely recommend you to anyone and will be...
Read moreWent for lunch, the waiter who looked to be in charge walked straight past me and went to the couple behind me to ask if they wanted seating. Credit to the girl at the bar she seen this and asked if I was wanting food and to take a seat anywhere outside. I ordered a couple of drinks and was told they would bring them over. We sat at a table watched the waiter try to deliver the drinks to the wrong table so shouted after him. The heat was incredible outside and we asked a young lad to put a umbrella up for us, he said he would but never returned. We moved tables to find a bit of shade. I then had to ask someone for a menu whilst watching everyone else get served. They said they would bring one over. After 40 minutes we went to the bar and paid our drinks and the bar maid said 'oh sorry we don't serve food to that table you need to be on the top decking.' 4 different interactions with 4 different waiting staff and not one of them even thought to tell us, that despite telling them I wanted food and asking for a menu. Really poor customer service! Even though the food is great I really won't be...
