I found this charming pub/restaurant entirely by chance. Having been unwell and unable to leave home for five weeks (nothing contagious I promise) I was desperate to get out for some air and a mini celebration of my birthday at the end of April.
Still having to be careful of what I was eating I carefully scanned the online menu to find a choice of sandwiches I could work with. (Actually soft baps, but still all good).
We arrived around lunchtime to find a pleasant crowd of people in the gardens, including a delightful family that I stopped to share birthday greetings with as their daughter had just turned 18. Ahh, those were the days...
Never having been before, we didn't realise that the pub was on different levels and we missed the main entrance. My Husband went in to enquire as a recent stroke resulted in my needing a walker, and while I was waiting, two separate guests enquired as to my well being and whether I needed help.
The bar manager (I believe) came and opened the doors for me to enter by a slope and helped me get over the door frame. I wouldn't have had to do that if I had gone the correct way, so it isn't usually a problem.
I couldn't actually find the sandwiches/rolls on the printed menus but my husband was able to order them at the bar. We had the hunter's chicken which we requested without bbq sauce which they were happy to do.
It came with a decent amount of side salad which, I admit, I was disappointed to see, was drizzled with some kind of dressing. I commented to the waitress that I wish I had known about the dressing (I might have sounded a bit whingy, sorry) and she immediately went and replaced it with fresh salad which was greatly appreciated.
The roll was lovely and fresh with thick chunks of roast chicken with bacon and cheese. Unfortunately, I only managed a quarter of my roll and salad but I had come prepared with tinfoil and zipped bags to take the rest home for later.
I didn't ask if the pub could supply anything like that, so I don't know what the situation is for 'takeaway'.
My Husband is not a big dessert eater, but does love apple crumble and custard so I had the lemon sorbet as I know he wouldn't have ordered it otherwise.
Mine was lovely and refreshing and he said his crumble was very tasty. He remarked that it hadn't looked large in the dish but that it was more than enough when it came down to it.
We never caught the name of the lady who served us, but she deserves a special thank you for all she did for us and seemed to be, almost, running the catering part single handed.
The prices were reasonable, there was a selection of beer to suit the 'other half' and we were able to park without difficulty.
All in all, we had a lovely time at The Aspen Tree and look forward to visiting again in the...
Read moreExtremely disappointed with our visit to the aspen tree today this is the 2nd time In 2 weeks we have chosen to go there for lunch and both occassions we have had bad experiences, but I'm a firm believer in 2nd chances hence why we returned there today 13/4/18. Not only do the menus advertise products they don't sell but they also dont let the customer swap items, such as the chicken New Yorker, which comes with 2 chicken breasts i asked for them to change it to 1 southern fried chicken breast and I was told no, surely if I'm paying for it I should get a choice!! I went with the chicken New Yorker as it comes..... big mistake, when it arrived it was bone dry, rock hard to the point while I was trying to cut it the pressure I had to use knocked my chips flying and the onion rings that came with it were like mush couldn't find a trace of onion in them!! After all that I asked for my money back and was told I would only get £2.50 because i had bought 2 meals in the £8.49 deal and my son had the fish and chips which would cost if bought seperately £5.99. Now although the difference is indeed £2.50 it's not my fault the meal was way below average and expected at least half of the £8.50 I'd payed.... as it was their fault and they should be making up for their mistake!! On top of that I ordered 2 slush puppies but the strawberry flavoured one was practically just ice (not drinkable unless left for a while) so asked for a splash of lemonade to mix in to make it juicier (so got less slush) and still got charged 65p extra for the same amount of drink so a small slush ended up costing me £2.44.... I refused the £2.50 refund out of principle and told the waitress (none of it her fault) to return my food to the kitchen and let the chef know it's was s**t and that I wouldn't be coming here Again!! I advise anyone that's thinking of going to this establishment not to bother and to find somewhere else to go like the Collier Row Inn the food there is amazing and better priced and staff have more respect for their customers and their opinions, only reason I didn't go there myself was because the parking isn't great!! It's a shame about this place as I had been going to the aspen tree since I was a child... I'll put it down to bad management and low...
Read moreWe went here on Sunday 10th September, very hot day and very busy . As such we waited almost an hour but given the amount of people there that was not surprising. There were 5 of us , 4 meals were very good , Lasagna, Hunters Chicken , gammon , egg ,chips & beans x2 . The 5th meal was my husbands , he chose the fish which was very thin and also very dry . It was very good value for the price we paid and had my husbands food been as tasty as the other 4 of us I would definitely give 5 stars . Will come again for sure but avoid the fish & chips . The girl brought out the meals holding the plates with a cloth but failed to warn my young granddaughter that the plate was very hot which whilst it would be obvious isn’t necessarily obvious...
