We came here for a birthday meal. I made the server aware of my coeliac disease, and was asked 'how severe is it?'. Instant red flag.
There was no separate gluten free menu, nor did the menu list any allergens. I asked if the steak was gluten free, and was told I can have it without the sauce or fries. No other options listed, no option to substitute. The server didn't suggest anything else. When I asked why I couldnt have the lemon and herb dressing I was told it contained celery and mustard which 'you can't have'. Which is incorrect, and when I said this, the server disagreed with me and told me very confidently that I couldn't have the sauce. They didn't believe me about my own condition! As a 'compromise' the sauce could be served separately with the salad. Lo and behold, I had a steak with salad, with a tiny pot of dressing. A different server who brought it didn't know if it was gluten free either, and went off to ask the chef. They never returned. So no lemon and herb dressing for me. Another waiter who happened to be at the next table helpfully suggested the chimichurri dressing for my steak/salad, which when I tried to order, the original server once again told me I couldn't have it either because it contained cream- again, incorrect!! I couldn't believe it. My substitute, substitute dressing arrived about 5mins later, and I had a chimichurri flavoured steak and salad. No variety. Still cost nearly £40.
That an upscale restaurant could have such poor training on allergies is quite frankly astounding in this day and age. We paid more for this single course meal than we have at Michelin star restaurants! I found the experience exasperating as a coeliac and needless to say would not be recommending this to anyone with coeliac disease, food allergies or intolerances. It is hard enough to live with this condition.
Please note- coeliac disease is an auto-immune disease caused by a reaction to wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt and other grains. It is NOT an allergy, and even if it was, there is no such thing as a 'mild' or 'safe' level of...
Read moreI visited along with my husband on 1 May 2022 at 8pm. The purpose of our visit was to celebrate my birthday and my husband wanted to make it special as I just gave birth a week ago.
from the moment we arrived at the restaurant, the experience was beyond awful. There was an extensive que to enter the restaurant despite us having a reservation. We were then escorted to a table absolutely cramped between 4 other diners and I was barely able to squeeze in despite there being over 5 tables completely empty for the duration of our dinner.
We then waited over 20 minutes for a waiter to even approach us for drinks.
Once we ordered, our meal was actually given to the table next to us, who began enjoying our meal to then realise their order was incorrect. When this was pointed out to the waiter he apologised to those diners stating that the food was in fact ours. We had ordered 2 ribeye steaks. Within less than 5 minutes, the waiter surprisingly returned with 2 ribeye steaks. I questioned how two steaks were made so quickly and that I was concerned it was the same steak given to the other table which were touched by other diners being given to us. The waiter denied this but was unable to answer how our steaks prepared so quickly. To think we were 100% given the used steaks makes me sick to my absolute core especially given the covid-19 pandemic. To think a reputable restaurant such as steak and lobster has such poor hygiene practices is absolutely appalling and I will make this aspect of my experience known on other review platforms.
We were also not provided steak knives and instead had to eat our steak with a butter knife.
This was the first time we visited steak and lobster and will certainly be the last. Absolutely disgusting customer service. Hygiene also zero. Worst meal of my life and a special occasion ruined. I was left with pains in my back given the close proximity of seating...
Read moreStarting with the positive, the food was well prepared and as flavorful as I have come to expect from restaurants in the UK. Absolutely nothing wrong with what they do, just a cultural difference. They tend to use more herbs and I am used to heavier spices. That said, I took no stars off for that personal preference and will note that all our steaks were cooked to proper temp and were tender. The problem comes in with the service! We were seated at a table for 4 with only 2 place settings. It took asking 4 times to receive eating utensils and, unfortunately, that was pretty standard service all night! One of our party received her food before the appetizers and a full 35 minutes before the rest of us received ours! We suspect that meal was delivered to the wrong table, but at the time it simply appeared to be fast service. In keeping with the theme of the night, requested condiments for our table did not arrive until the meal was more than half consumed. And, to top off the evening, after waiting over half an hour after the main course on the desserts we ordered (ordered DURING our meal because we had recognized the trends by this point), we just decided to give up and cancel the desserts and go ahead and leave! Magically, as if they had just been sitting there waiting all along, our desserts appeared as soon as we complained. Not one pence offered in discount for an abysmal 2.5 hour experience, and only a brief passing apology by a server from another section who had evidently noticed the struggle bus our section was riding on!! Overall, a horrid way to close out our visit to the UK!! Everyone at our table agreed we would have been better off grabbing fast food and turning in nearly 2 hours earlier to prepare for our flight. Would not recommend...
