It was my first time at The Rose & Crown. We finally managed to get a baby sitter and have some time to ourselves with my partner so I was really looking forward to a nice time. My partner has been a few times but only for drinks. The outside area is nice, you have plenty of tables and there are blankets in case it's a bit cold. It was a week day and wasn't particularly busy, but had the feeling that the staff were a bit overwhelmed with the amount of people they were looking after (3 waitresses and about 15 tables, but only some had food). We ordered calamari and beef croquettes for starters. The calamari was nice but the croquettes had hardly any beef in them and the sauce it came with was a bit too much. For mains we had fish and chips and chicken pie. The fish was big however the batter was a bit overcooked, almost burned in some places. The fish itself was nice. The pie was a let down. Came without any veg or mash. When we mentioned this to two waitresses they weren't sure whether it should come with some or not (the menu states it does). Eventually they brought some mixed vegetables out but it looked nothing like the pie dishes that were served at other tables. By the time it arrived my partner had pretty much eaten most of the pie. To top it off, I asked for a gin and tonic with no ice as it was a bit cold that day. I was given tonic water with ice but no gin. Asked two of the waitresses and they were both laughing when mentioned this rather than apologise. Eventually, about 10-15 minutes they brought out the gin in the biggest ever glass which was filled to the top with ice. I understand that things have changed and a lot of people have left the business and the hospitality sector due to Covid. However, they should try and get their staff trained and sometimes just having common sense helps. We both have worked in customer service for a number of years so it might be that our expectations are higher but I was really disappointed with the lack of passion for the job. They added 12.5% service charge to the bill which we refused to pay as we thought there was a lack of good customer service. We always tip wherever we go but I find it a bit of a push when they automatically add service charge to the bill. We will go back and give it another try as the outside looks likely but I don't think we will have...
Read moreLovely venue, the food was massively underwhelming, Red Leicester cheese on Garlic bread was bizarre. The Bread and oil & vinaigrette was a good starter.
Brisket beef & cheddar cheese starter was ok. But not much meat content as mostly cheese.
Mains x 3 Sirloin beef roast dinners were let down by the stringy chewy cuts of meat (on all 3 plates).
Had to ask for another bowl of vegetables as we had only been given one small bowl of veg between 3 of us ?!! (Veg was nice tbf)
One of our party had Fish and chips (decent fish)
On while spent just under £200 for 5 of us although 1 person only had a starter and cheese garlic bread (with Red Leicester cheese when was rubbery and no hint of garlic on the bread) That was awful …!
To summaries, the staff who attended our table were very good, but considering the cost of the food the expectation was high but the quality of the food as a whole failed to deliver on balance with the cost.
Better quality food can be found elsewhere and at a fairer price.
Won’t be tempted to go back again and that was the general consensus from all 5 of us that attended.
A shame, as the venue is really nice with a nice big beer garden at the rear with plenty of staff looking after it all.
So in summary, the venue promised much, but didn’t deliver a particular good experience for me, and if you include a 10% service charge on top of the bill.
Maybe it was an off day for our experience, but first impressions...
Read moreAfter being in locked down for the past 4 month,I was really excited to treat the kids to a nice pub dinner . On arrival we was happily greeted and seated promptly, after being seated we waited a least 15 minutes before anyone took I drink order,15 minutes after ordering our drinks they arrived after watching them sit on the outdoor bar for 5 minutes. Immediately upon arrival the beer was flat it’s very disappointed as it’s my first beer in four months, waited another five minutes then someone come over and took out food order I ordered four pizzas for the kids and three portions of chips and some nachos , The pizza arrived first it tasted like it was made with sugar ,I thought the cook must had made a mistake, but when I questioned him he said it was a honey glaze and it was on the menu I must of missed it ,surely it should be advertised as (honey glazed pepperoni )rather than (spicy pepperoni) the nachos arrived and were some concoction of puff pastry and a lump of cheese which was not evan melted properly, chip were served in a basket and they put paper in the bottom so it looks as though there full ,let me assure you for £4:95 a portion you get 10 chips, why are they scrimping on potatoes when there charging this ridiculous sum ,after finishing dinner and couldn’t wait to leave , I had to wait a life time to get my bill ,losing patience I kindly signal a...
