The Brewer’s Arms is one of those proper, lovely pubs that feels like a reward in itself—especially after a walk. The atmosphere is friendly, the drinks are well-kept, and the food is spot on. I especially recommend their Sunday roast—it’s one of the best in the area. Pro tip: make sure you get there for midday. It’s first come, first served for the roasts, and they do sell out. You’ll often see a little crowd forming at the bar just before noon, so getting in early is well worth it.
If the weather’s playing nicely, we can grab a spot outside. There’s something especially satisfying about sitting out in the sun, pint in hand, roast dinner steaming in front of you, with that post-hike glow in your legs. Or, if we’re fuelling up before heading out on a walk, it’s a hearty way to start—comforting and substantial, without being overly heavy.
There’s a relaxed, unpretentious feel to the place. No fuss, just good food and a proper local vibe. The garden’s peaceful too, with views out over the surrounding hills if you get the right seat. It’s one of those places that feels like a bit of a secret, even though plenty of people clearly know how good it is.
Whether we’re walking before, after, or not at all, it’s always worth a visit. Just don’t...
Read moreAn interesting, quirky pub that, having read the reviews and seen the photos, I was keen to sample. In some ways it exceeded expectations and in some ways it was disappointing.
The pros: 1. It was certainly different and its setting was possibly unique (access by foot down a hillside); 2. A characterful, historic pub inside and out; 3. A community pub (always good); 4. good beer garden with good views; 5. excellent food.
The cons: I was looking forward to the friendly, welcoming staff & customers described in reviews. Not my experience over 2 evenings. Don't get me wrong: nobody was actively unfriendly but neither were they welcoming or inclusive. It's obviously a locals pub as most customers seemed to know each other and you never feel more isolated than when everybody is chatting and laughing and you're being ignored. The food was very good (although on the pricey side) but it was disappointing to have a fish meal described as a 'fillet' only to find it was half a fillet. As a real ale fan, I'd seen the photos of the row of handpumps so it was a let-down to find half...
Read moreWow! Stayed in an AirBnB about 100yds from this pub, and felt it would be rude not to investigate. We instantly fell in love with it, and abandoned our plans to eat out in various places. We went 4 times in 48 hours, eating twice. The food was simply fantastic, and VERY reasonably priced! We had the wonderful breaded plaice baguette with fries for less than £7. The quality was wonderful and we were both bewildered at how such prices could turn a profit. Also had blackened Halibut (superb) and delicious whole dressed crab, both £18. Incredibly friendly, passionate and committed staff. We stayed on later to share a pudding (crème brûlée, with raspberries, also top notch for £5.95!!) enjoying the atmosphere by playing cards! Cannot recommend this pub more highly, on so many levels. Oh, and a view TO DIE FOR from the characterful, varied ‘outside rooms’. Thank you for a wonderful welcome and terrific food! Andrew and Katie. p.s. Also a lovely selection of local beers, including Mild, which I love, but can’t ever get...
