Nice pub for a drink but worth a miss if your going for the vegan options. Whilst I'm sure the food is lovely in general my wife and I paid a visit specifically because it offered a number of vegan options and decided to start with a selection of the 'bites' section one of which was Patatas Bravas which also came as a vegan option (simply the same dish with no chorizo) When the selection turned up and we started to eat, I bit into a piece of chorizo which was exactly what I asked not to have. I spoke with the manager who was clearly very apologetic and offered to comp our meal but unfortunately this had rather put us off the possibility of eating anything else especially as my wife also has an almond allergy. We just couldn't take the chance that if something this simple was incorrect, the possibility of getting an almond in a dish could leave us with a much bigger issue. We were also given some garlic mayonnaise (bearing in mind everything we ordered was vegan) and when I asked one of the wait staff if it was also vegan, she told us that she would think it should be as we had ordered vegan dishes and didn't seem to think to check. I think the overriding theme here is although they offer vegan dishes they're not really able to cater for vegans. So if you are vegan I would suggest not having...
Read moreOur visit to The Sir John Barleycorn in Cadnam was nothing short of fantastic! From the moment we stepped inside, we were welcomed by the warm and inviting ambiance of this charming pub. The blend of traditional decor with modern comforts made it a perfect spot for a relaxing meal.
The menu was impressive, offering a variety of mouth-watering options. I decided to try the steak and ale pie, and it was delicious – the pastry was perfectly flaky, and the filling was rich and flavourful. My friend had the seafood platter, which was fresh and beautifully presented. Both dishes were generous in portion and tasted amazing.
The service was outstanding. The staff were friendly, attentive, and genuinely cared about our dining experience. They were happy to accommodate our requests and even recommended some excellent local ales to complement our meals.
The dessert was the highlight of our evening. We shared a homemade apple crumble with custard, and it was the perfect end to a wonderful meal – comforting, sweet, and utterly satisfying.
If you’re in Cadnam and looking for a place with excellent food, great service, and a cozy atmosphere, The Sir John Barleycorn is a must-visit. We can’t...
Read moreDidn't realise a New Forest thatched pub, was now an Indian, with the majority of dishes on offer being curry. If we wanted a curry, we would go to an Indian restaurant. We should have known, given the fact it was Saturday lunch and there were only 3 other tables having lunch. It smelt as soon as we walked in, not the cosy little thatch pub fire burning smell, but curry.
The open sandwich was slapped on the plate, was cold, fries were cold, salad very depressing, even I could have made better, and I'm a useless cook. The food arrived within 3 or 4 minutes after ordering, which is always a concern. There were plaster holes in the wall, salt shakers etc dirty and sticky.
Only out of sheer desperation would I consider returning. I wanted to highlight the disappointment to the staff, but they were timid teenagers and I don't think they could handle any constructive criticism. I'd just like to say, that when I was a waitress, at 15 years old I still dressed smart and presentable, which seems to be non existent in a number of establishments these days.
Just another disappointing lack of great British hospitality (the experience, not the staff, they were...
