A sad end to a brilliant day. On the way back from the beach we thought we'd stop in for a bite to eat. It was busy but not packed in Tredegar Arms and the Greene king app worked fine to order both food and drinks. Drinks arrived in a couple of minutes. The food... not so much. An hour after I'd ordered I went to the bar to find out what had happened to my order and they said they were busy and it would be some time before it arrived - the waitress then estimated about another 20 minutes. Another 20 minutes was about right. So 80 mins after we ordered. We'd ordered a kids cheese and tomato pizza, which was ok, a kids chicken nuggets, which was ok, I'd ordered a mixed grill with salt and pepper squid topping, which was borderline acceptable - steak wasn't remotely medium rare, sausages were cheap and gristly, gammon was ok, chicken was really nice, and the salt and pepper squid topping was, frankly, tiny - four small pieces for 2.99. Oh well. My wife ordered a lasagne, and this was particularly bad, it appeared to have been under a heat lamp for some time as it was dried most of the way through and very crunchy. Picture attached is of the lasagne. We didn't stay for pudding as the girls needed to be going to bed. Very sad, we've got great memories of this pub and indeed we really like the park-y-prior on the other side of Newport. Great dog friendly pub and drinks were fine and arrived quickly so maybe it was just a kitchen problem. But there we go I can only review on what we had.

My husband & I were passing through the area & I was hoping to find somewhere still serving a Sunday roast. I looked up a few options, rang one or two, who stopped serving at 4pm. It was now 5.45pm. We came across Tredegar Arms & they had availability, so we went in. We were shown a table behind the double open fireplace & chatted to the locals about the football game being shown. I ordered a roast turkey dinner, my husband had a lasagne & chips. Both were delicious & we finished the lot! The turkey was lovely & moist, generous amount, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, Yorkshire pud, pig in blanket, stuffing & gravy, all tasty & I was also given redcurrant sauce which I like to accompany the meat.๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ Good value for money & thoroughly fed, we will remember next time we're in the area & enjoy another meal there, hopefully when it's colder so the fireplace will be lit! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š

Visited here today for Sunday lunch and was extremely disappointed. The beef dinner was awful..as well as barely warm,. the meat was full of thick fat that was disgusting and unedable. The cauliflower cheese and carrots were almost raw The gravy was thin and left a ' claggy feeling ' in the mouth The Yorkshire pudding was soggy. The only nice part of the meal was the roast potatoes. The cutlery container was dirty and full of loose salt which covered the bottom of the forks and knives.. which again were not washed clean ๐Ÿ˜ž The toilets were dirty, the sinks and floors. I can truly say that the cleanliness overall is very poor. I mentioned my concerns to a staff member that didn't appear concerned. An overall awful experience.

Honest reviews are carried out on a mystery shopper basis, always unannounced at relatively quiet times I have no affiliation with the establishments I visit and are all non biased, completely honest reviews

Service with a smile, can't fault the staff friendly and helpful

Sorry guy's but the food was unacceptable

Order - Big Breakfast

Cup of Tea - served with dirty cup had to pick dirt out before pouring tea in

Black pudding - really bad, obviously cheap pre sliced portions but so old and unfresh it was visible, soggy discoloured smelt bad, a bit alarming for this type of food / meat

Sausages - not fresh seemed like not cooked on the day but heated up

Bacon - disgusting stringy fatty burnt

Hash browns - definitely not fresh, no crisp at all, soggy and seemed warmed up

Beans - looked like they were a few days old, cold

Mushrooms - not fresh enough nowhere near

Grilled tomato - again not fresh enough and hardly grilled

I genuinely felt if I ate the food it would make me ill

The problem here is obviously freshness

Food is obviously not being stored / refrigerated properly it was obvious that some or most of the ingredients had been sitting around far too long in the kitchen before they got to the plate, it's also obvious that some of the food is being reheated instead of being freshly cooked and so that obviously brings into question the age of the food being used

Understandably Green King aren't providing the best quality food to begin with but not serving the food fresh to the plate comes down to the staff

I really hope you can take this review onboard and improve, I really am sorry to have to write such a review and I mean no malice at all, I really was impressed with the young girl who served me and I did pick up a good relaxed atmosphere from the rest of the staff and pub in general. I'm sure this is a great place for drink but the food is...

From the moment we entered the building to the time we left not only was everywhere lovely and clean, but we were given a lovely welcome and great attention throughout.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome (and Tegwen is very well-behaved, so she just lay down by our table, not far from the lovely warm fire) and we sat down to read through the menus (one for children, one for 'oldies", one for Christmas, another for drinks, and the one we wanted; the full menu!) - and by gum, what a great range of food was on offer, all at great prices as well.

We ordered our food at the bar, and apart from being advised straight away that what I'd ordered wasn't available (allowing me to order a different meal) we were also advised that due to a large (pre-Christmas) group having come in just before us there might be a delay of up to 30mins (helpful information, as it gave us the chance to relax and chat more). In the event though the 'delay' was only about 15mins, and the food was worth the wait anyway.

The Tredegar Arms at Bassaleg is in a good location (Church & churchyard one side, its own car park, t'other) and apart from the main road outside being very busy, the area around it is quite quiet/peaceful.

If you've never been there before, or even if you pass it every day but have never stopped, either for a drink or for a meal, why don't you pleasantly surprise yourself (plus anyone you want to take there) and try them out? Hopefully like us you won't be disappointed, and who knows, you might stop there for a drink and/or a meal again and again in future!

Thanks to all at The Tredegar Arms for being so really welcoming; it made all the difference to us.

(P.S. did I see that you are now owned by The Greene King Group? They've certainly made a big difference to the dรฉcor as everywhere is a great colour...
