Popped in and ordered two fresh crab salads, which the waitress told us was a 'daily special'. However - when it came, whilst the salad was just about OK, the brown crab meat was like 'ladled gloop', and had clearly been frozen (so not fresh as claimed) and likely came from Phillip Dennis catering wholesale. There wasn't a single sign of sweet white crab meat anywhere, not so much as one tiny morsel. Quite frankly it tasted remarkably like 'Princes crab sandwich paste' (if you're old enough to remember the little glass jars). In addition we were asked to pay upfront for our meal - meaning they had our funds before we could grumble! Served with minimal butter, and a very watery coleslaw that obviously came from a British Rail buffet. In addition their dining hall was horrendously noisy, and you could not 'hear yourself think' - less still have a quiet conversation. There were absolutely no soft furnishings, no drapes or curtains, to absorb din of fifty people competing with each other to be heard at their own tables. We shan't ever bother visiting the place again. Leaving two stars for the food is erring...

Wonderful café set in the old Station next to Fremington Quay on the Taw estuary. Inside is museum next to the café which tells the story of the Quay from it's beginning up to the present day. There is also outdoor seating with views over the estuary towards Saunton Burrows and beyond. The old railway, now the Tarka Trail, is part of the Sustrans network and is easily accessible at many points along it's length and very popular with walkers and cyclists, easy exercise for all ages. The menu is well thought out, not a fast food burger joint thankfully. All tastes and diets are catered for and there's normally a 'Wow' from everyone when it comes. A very popular spot so there may be a short wait but it's well worth it. The service is great, they do a fantastic job catering for the numbers that pass through. The prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the food and location, they could easily charge more. If you still have room the cakes are sumptuous, a real delight. Highly recommended to anyone passing by on the Tarka Trail or driving down the lane next to the tidal...

Well the sun is shining bright, why not pop down here. You can hire bikes of all sorts/types or if your able to bring your own.. this is a great place to park your car and then enjoy a nice bike ride along the old railway line. One way and you can ride into Barnstaple and then te other way will lead you to Instow, Bideford and on....on.... Then you could also walk along the trails either way and take in the veiws as you go by. There's also the Quay it's self with places to park up and just sit on the grass area's and watch the world go by(very nice!!) You can also take your own picnic or make use of the tea room that is on the Quay, they have a wide choice of item's to pick from even a cream tea is on the menu..... for one or for two (yum yummmmm) 😍😍 uu vvv Right by this is a place that will give you the history of the Quay, what boats and trains would stop there on the Quay and as well as the different types of item that could be picked up either from the train or boat So why not come on down and see...

This review is mildly influenced by the fact there was not a cloud in the sky! We took on a short section of the Tarka trail from Barnstaple to Instow. Fremington Quay lies half way between and was a welcome stop along the route. The cafe used to be an old railway station and had been tastefully converted. Good selection of drinks and food (we didn't have a full meal but those we did see looked good and were consumed by their recipients with appropriate smiles and mmmmm's, so I guess it was good!). I plumped for that well known cycling energy food (likely used by Team Sky for their marginal gains ethos)...lemon drizzle cake. It was very good and not too expensive which is sometimes a slight criticism of isolated places which could take advantage of their location. Small player area for kids, plenty of picnic area, cycle shop near to the cafe and beautiful views across the Taw estuary. Well worth a visit.

I love coming here with my mum and nan. It's a great place to have a light lunch/meal. They do baguettes and jacket potatoes, and the portions are really good size, with good prices to match. There is inside and outside seating. It does get busy but they do work hard to keep everyone happy. Drinks are prepared quickly, and food comes out farely quick after that depending on what you choose and how busy they are. I haven't tried the cakes but they do look delicious with a variety to choose from. Also to add the beautiful view and free car parking available. Highchairs to use and they keep it clean. Toilets inside. Just be careful driving down the lane towards the cafe as it is a one way track with passing plots, and there can be pedestrians or cyclists, but as long as your slow and careful there are no problems.

Fremington Quay was once significant in the import and export of many goods. It had railway sidings, cranes, and other apparatus used for the export of ball clay and import of coal. Between the early to mid-twentieth century it was the busiest port (based on tonnage) between Bristol and Land's End. An abattoir was formerly located here. The quay has been redeveloped as an amenity facility with restaurant and provides wide views over the River Taw estuary. It has been a Conservation Area since 1996. Fremington quay station has now been turned into cafe restaurant on the bank of the river Taw , also a bike hire is near for an easy ride into near by Barnstaple to the east or westwards towards instow and Biddeford.
