This is one of my favourite pubs in the world. But I wish I could give it 5/5. However, I can't.
The pub itself it one of those very rare gems that really feels like you've stumbled across a Wayfarer's Tavern. It's like going back in time, and the owners/staff are your hosts. It's absolutely wonderful on that front. The outside space is small but really great in the late afternoon. The car park is a nightmare, but hey, it's a tiny village. Adds to the charm imho.
What's not great is the food. It has an excellent philosophy - but it is so inconsistent. For over a year the menu hasn't changed. The 'specials' are the same - always Venison (which can be nice of course). But what makes it so hard to rely on is that on one visit, it's all cooked great. The next, it's burned to a crisp. The next the portions are half the size as before. One time recently, we have one slice - one - of wafer-thin ham, for our ham-egg-n-chips. It was like ham bought from a Tesco sandwich ham pack. The prices are also a shade high - but i don't mind that if it's consistent and good.
In short, this pub is fantastic. But if you aren't happy with the food, tell them. It's a pub worth keeping on the map for decades to come - but only if it can be...

The staff were very friendly and accommodating.
In terms of food/drink; there is a sign right outside enquiring for staff, and their website explicitly say that they are struggling due to lack of staff and have reduced their hours. In such a small village, and with covid-19 looming, this is probably not a huge surprise.
That said, our food was a little bit expensive for what it was; quite bland - and it was a wee bit wrong. We ordered a pint and a half of beer and were sent out too flat pints, one of beer and one of cider. We sent back the cider but didn't have the heart to complain about the flat pint... so I just drank it. It was delicious beer, but flat.
I'd love to come back here when things have calmed down and they have enough staff. Our waitress was really nice but seemed a bit stressed out. Hope they can keep things going and get back to full staff levels, both for the customers and to help out the...
Read moreVisited here today. Quaint Inn off the beaten track near to Lee Bay. The inside is really nice with low beams ( beware if you are tall ), clean and tidy. Toilets are upstairs and again clean and tidy. There is a garden area outside to drink and eat food but needs some regular attention. The only downside for the visit, and I have learnt a really valuable lesson, ask what the soup of the day is. Having walked for 3 gruelling miles around the coast from Ilfracombe we stopped at the Inn for a wonderful drink and some food, that is really well priced by the way. When you order soup you expect the soup to be in a liquid form in a bowl, with bread or bread role and butter. The soup that came was so thick we needed to spread it on the bread and what it was made of I really dont know. I completed mine but my wife only had half. The soup of the day was Dahl never heard of it before, but it was GROSE. I will leave it...
