MESSAGE * I need to Express and report my utter disappointment and terrible treatment at the hands of John proprietor at the Sportsman pub Preston Village North Shields Tyne and Wear My elderly parents my friend and myself were very much mistreated and disrespected. I will be seeking professional advice On Christmas Day I was looking forward to having Christmas Lunch at the Sportsman with my mam and step dad whom are both under going treatment for memory loss issues, they are both elderly so going somewhere they know and easy to access is extremely important!
We have dined at the Sportman quite a few times and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, the staff have always been courteous and lovely so consequently I have recommended this pub / restaurant to many people even advertising how lovely the food was on social media. I booked and paid £80 deposit in November for us to have a special time together as time is not given. We arrived at the sportsman at 4 o’clock our allocated time slot, as soon as we arrived we were asked to pay the remaining £200 CASH at the bar.
My elderly parents were cold as the temperature in the bar area was a lot a lot cooler than the restaurant, and my parents had to keep their coats on. The helpful young man at the bar was very accommodating and kindly gave my parents blankets to keep warm when they sat down at the table.
The service of one young Lady and two young men was impeccable, they were all very friendly and polite.
The meal was appearing to go as planned 1st course shrimp cocktail which we all ate and enjoyed however the main course arrived. We were disappointed at the look of the main course literally swapped in gravy please see photo attached) _
I asked politely if we could please have our meals replaced, as 2 of the meals were not of good standard. However we were told no!
Our meals were taken away by a staff member. The owner John then came over to our table, his attitude was terrible disgraceful ! we were informed we were not going to have our meal replaced so we had to do without our Christmas lunch. My friend requested a refund for the meals that had not been touched John (owner) refused!
The whole experience was obviously upsetting my parents they were unable to eat very much because of the horrible situation and attitude of the owner Absolutely appalling behaviour from a person who serves the public.
I took a photograph of our main course to show the substandard of the food, (which was not comparable with the advertised meal) taking a photograph of our meal did not appease the proprietor.
All of this Could have easily been rectified by taking the plates away and re placing the un edible main course.
It is an absolute disgrace to provide a service that is substandard and charge best part of £300 (excluding drinks)
To ruin what should have been a wonderful experience at Christmas with my parents.
I will be posting a photograph of the disgusting presentation of our Christmas day meal it certainly was not comparable with the advertised Christmas Day lunch.
I’m a great believer in the truth and the truth always comes out in the end The owner of sportsman might think he can lie and get away with treating people so badly on Christmas Day What has been written by the sportsman is ludicrous and full of mistruths which I can prove...
Read moreMy Father & I hadn't been in this pub since the Rememberance Sunday before Lockdown & this was actually our first pub meal since that afternoon some 2+ years later. Dad had said the pub only did food at lunchtimes, but a few evenings a week have been added since. Food is properly home cooked & (hopefully this isn't misinterpreted, as it's intended to be a compliment) I would go so far as to say it's so much like a meal your grandmother or an aunt would cook for you. Evening food is at the latter end of the week between 5-7pm, but given recently price hikes all over, the meals are reasonably priced with a decent choice of drinks. The staff are not only very pleasant and will acknowledge that they're going to be with you shortly, but keen to look after you while there. Toilet facilities were spotless & looked after well (smart tiled walls etc). You'd visit again & leave very satisfied too. Bonus for me was that my father only lives a couple of streets away but there are a few places to park nearby. The pub also has a proper concrete wheelchair ramp for those who need one & what's more, it's not cluttered with furniture hurdles inside. Best bit for the local traditionalists, is the classic old S&NB "blue star" sign hanging up on top (from my knowledge, the Pineapple has a similar sign from the golden era), though sadly no Newcastle Exhibition on tap or Amber Ale bottles. But I can thoroughly recommend a visit - a traditional village pub tucked away in a predominantly...
Read moreI visited The Sportsman last Friday (mother's day weekend) I took my mam for lunch along with our little dog. I had small fish and chips with a lovely glass of red wine and my mam had the homemade corned beef pie with a lovely white wine. The fish was big for it being a small portion and delicious, chips were perfectly cooked I thoroughly enjoyed it. The homemade corned beef pie was unreal also and the service was great. The 2 lovely ladies who served us were very pleasant and polite they looked after us well. Our dog wasn't the only dog there and the atmosphere was lovely also. This was my first time visiting the pub, my mam has been a few times for food previously and this was her choice of outing. I would definitely go back and highly recommend for food and drinks. Nice to have homemade food served, none of the microwave grub you get from alot of bars these days. The Sportsman pub is very traditional, relaxing and very clean with high standards and a really good vibe. I'm from the Newcastle area and it's well worth a trip down to North Shields to visit for food and drinks. Kelly,...
