We were a family of seven and tried calling ahead to book, knowing the weather would be nice and it would likely be busy. Unfortunately, no one answered the phone, so we booked online, leaving both our contact email and phone number along with a message explaining we’d be bringing our dog and would need a dog-friendly table. We never received a response.

When we arrived, we were told dogs aren’t allowed inside the restaurant. Instead, we were offered a table in the bar area, but since the weather was nice, we opted to sit outside in the garden.

As expected, it was very busy due to the sunshine. We placed our food order at the bar and were told there would be a one-hour wait. That was understandable under the circumstances, so we were happy to wait. However, after an hour, the food still hadn’t arrived. We followed up and were told it would be another 15 minutes — but it ended up being another 30 before anything came.

When the food finally arrived, it was missing cutlery, which we had to go inside and get ourselves. This wasn’t mentioned at the time of ordering, and it would have been helpful to know.

We ordered three roast dinners, a steak, a chilli, and a kids' meal. Unfortunately, everything was lukewarm at best and cooled down quickly. Portion sizes were small, with just one small dish of vegetables shared between three roast dinners. The steak, priced at £27.50, was especially underwhelming and not worth the cost.

We understand places get busy when the weather is good — that's exactly why we tried to book ahead. Sadly, this visit felt disorganised, overpriced, and poorly managed. The food did not live up to expectations, and some staff members were not particularly friendly.

Overall, a really disappointing first experience. We won’t be returning, and we wouldn’t...

2nd visit to The red lion. Both times the food has been excellent but on both occasions the service has not matched. On our first visit we were part of a larger table so put the slow service down to that. On our 2nd visit (4th May) we waited a long time at the "wait to be seated sign". Countless members of staff walked by without even acknowledging us. I understand they were busy taking drinks etc but a little " someone will be with your shortly" wouldn't go amiss. A lady (tall) finally came and greeted us. She was chewing gum wasn't very professional!! There was no cutlery on the table and the lady advised that they had run out and that she would bring some over. She didn't and we had to ask again when out food arrived.Order was taken quickly and the mains did come out in good time. As I said before the food was delicious and hot. We asked for dessert menus and they took a while to arrive. We then waited 25 minutes for someone to take our order but we ended up having to get up and ask someone. Dessert came out quickly and were nice. No came to clear our plates or ask us if we wanted anything else. Another 20 minutes past still no one. We ended up going to the bar to pay. This place has the potential to be amazing if staff were trained to be...

so my fiance visited this evening with her friends for a catch up. they sat outside as it was still a lovely day.

she had ordered the vegetable lasagne and was really looking forward to it.

the meal came out and she told me it looked amazing.

untill the 3rd bite, when a bay leaf got lodged in her throat. despite her friend trying to get it out by slapping her back. she felt like she couldn't breathe and was scared to death for her life.

fortunately, the bay leaf became dislodged and she is ok. she has a sore throat and is worried about eating and drinking anything as it may hurt.

she had mentioned it to the waitress who went inside and gave her a full refund, but there was no interaction from any sort of manager or even the chef.

from what I know about cooking a bay leaf is only used to season the ingredients and shouldn't be eaten as it stays in a rigid state and can get lodged in any part of the digestive system.

I cannot look at the menu to see if there is anything with the ingredients that state a bay leaf will be in the dish as your site it currently undergoing maintenance.

attention to detail is major thing, especially when this could of been alot worse...

Dropped in for meal on way home early evening, were shown to a table right by the log burning stove and asked for our drinks order shortly after, we booked our meals at same time. Drinks came straight away and the food soon after. We asked for tapwater which came straight away. The two young waitresses were very polite, and attentive. We enjoyed our mains, and both found the portions generous. Would fully recommend this establishment there are generous outdoor seating areas too for the summer days we are all looking forward to.
