I went to Sul Lago on Saturday for my fifth wedding Anniversary which had become our usual Restaurant to celebrate in. The restaurant is lovely, the staff are usually attentive. I am on a wheat free diet so i had to pick through the menu as they do not cater for this. I ordered ribs as a starter, and the wife ordered muscles. The ribs were as usual were fantastic however, the muscles were over cooked. I had asked the waitress to confirm if any wheat ingredients went into the ribs and she reassured me she would check, never saw her at my table again. We also had to order a bread for the muscles which came in at £3.80 for 5 small slices, after first being brought sweet chilli sauce instead of the bread we had asked for. For the main course i ordered Chicken cooked with peppers, onions, and mushrooms in a red wine sauce with rice, the wife ordered a sirloin steak cooked with dolcelatte cheese white wine and cream. My wife's dishes presentation was poor to say the least we had taken friends to this restaurant earlier in the year and she had had the same dish, but done properly. This time she was disappointed in all aspects of her plate. My chicken was nice unfortunately the sauce was simply gravy/demi glaze with very little taste other than gravy, there was 4 slivers of mushroom (on the menu it states cooked with mushrooms, there was less than half a mushroom on my plate) which myself and the wife were laughing about at the time. The rice where do i even start?! Bearing in mind this was a complete meal so no veg or potatoes, the rice was over cooked, stodgy and uneatable (unless i had added some cream and a little nutmeg and changed it into rice pudding, this gives you an idea of the constancy). My wife ate all hers simply because it had cheese she was able to look past all the other let downs. I however only ate my chicken, not once did anyone come and check the food was ok until the plates were cleared. The waiter asked if everything was ok, my wife pointed out that no it wasn't that i was unhappy with the state of my main course. He said i'll get the boss, the next time i saw him he was putting the bill on the table. No boss, no sorry; just attitude. We left, paid the very hefty bill for what was a very poor dining experience, advising the man on the till that everything that evening was very poor, again just attitude still no sorry. I made a comment later that night on their facebook page under their reviews, Monday morning i received a message from facebook saying my message had been taken down and a complaint had been made, the irony! So here i am. Would i go to Sul Lago again? Probably not, next time i'll just do what i should have done in the first place and book in advance for...
Read moreAfter taking a stroll we decided to pop in here for dinner.
We were pleasantly approached by a waiter wearing a visor who asked if we wanted to be seated indoors or out. The venue itself was very open and spacious with several depictions of Leonardo D'vinci art from the Vatican on the ceiling and walls.
The outside area beheld a lovely forest scenery but it was too windy despite the warm sun so we retreated back inside.
I will be honest, the prices were a bit steeper than I expected. Starters from £7 upwards and mains from £12 to £30 or more.
The selection was diverse though, (see photo). It did take a while to get a drink because they were a little busy being Saturday but they were all pleasant. I ordered a glass of pinot grigio along with a spicy pork sausage in red wine sauce and a Ciro linguine which included monkfish, scallops, King prawns, squid and mussels in a tomato sauce.
My other half had the mozzarella in parmaham followed by paridiso linguine containing crab meat and King prawns in a garlic lemon creamy sauce.
The sausage was really tasty and came with some fresh flat bread to dunk into the rich sauce . On receiving my main I was offered a sprinkling of parmesan cheese which complimented the dish. There was only a couple pieces of monkfish and scallops but lots of prawns and squid. It all tasted fresh and plesant but preferred the richer sauce the sausage had been floating in.
My partners starter was really good although a little stingey with the parmaham. His main was also good with strong tasting crab.
To finish we both enjoyed a coffee, mine being a liqueur one of course. Overall we enjoyed the experience, its a nice venue but because Italian food has such simple ingredients I find it quite easy to find someone who does it better. I did find it a little over priced for some dishes and could have placed more certain ingredients on the plate. I have simply just had better for less. Would I come back? Yes I would come back with a member of my family for a special...
Read moreI'm afraid this place is all fur coat and no knickers.
We visited recently for my brothers birthday. We ordered drinks at the bar and chatted with the barman a bit, before being seated.
Everyone ordered starters apart from two of us as we wanted to save room for desert, everyone who ordered enjoyed their starters; unfortunately, the night was all down hill from there.
For main I ordered the filet steak in black pepper, cream and brandy sauce - medium rare. The steak came medium-well and the sauce was mediocre at best, I'd say the quality is close to what I'd expect at Wetherspoons.
My partner ordered the creamy linguine with king prawns, crab claw meat, garlic and lemon juice, it was also mediocre, the pasta was a bit too "al dente" and the dish wasn't exactly popping with flavour.
The wait staff passed us many times as we sat with empty glasses, I asked one of that waiters for a glass of lemonade which never arrived, I had to prompt the wait staff myself (again) to get another round of drinks for the table, including a £6 bottle of wine marked up at 500% (we looked it up).
For desert I ordered the melt-in-the-middle fondant flambeed in Sambuca, the dish was delivered to the table by some guy who decided it was a good idea to play with my food for five minutes before I was permitted to dig in, he poured over and flambeed the Sambuca and stirred it into the sauce for me, a very pretentious and unnecessary show. What I can only assume to have been a Heinz chocolate fondant had been microwaved for a tad too long, as it was not melt-in-the-middle at all. The anise flavour of the Sambuca did not compliment the chocolate sauce at all, as I had suspected, but figured I'd give it a go anyway.
I contemplated not leaving a tip by my partner forced me to leave one, so I begrudgingly left a small tip of around £13.
The...
