Really lovely setting, and a very classy restaurant to eat in.

Staff were very polite and were attentive to our needs.

The food was good, but not as good as we hoped for. We were asked how we would like our food cooked, being that half of us had steaks. Even though I said medium rare, and specified I like a little bit of blood in the middle, it was served more at medium well, with a slight pink tint to the meat, but otherwise cooked thoroughly through. My dish was also served with caramelized carrots, and they were definitely served boiled. They were not sweet, they just tasted like a cooked, chopped carrot! The food tasted nice, but nothing special... Which is disappointing at the price.

There was a large wedding, which had disrupted other services on site, so maybe the kitchen was overwhelmed. In any case, we would have preferred to wait longer and have a more tailored meal.

I later ordered a spirit and coke, and the coke had no gas in it, so tasted very odd. I had to go and take the drink back, and got a new drink with no ice, however this was not as carbonated as coke usually is.

I'm giving this place the benefit of doubt, that they may have had a bit of an off night in the kitchen, but for the money, I don't think the food was up to scratch. The atmosphere was lovely, and it has stunning views, unfortunately the food was not as good as it could have been.

On a side note, the ladies toilet cubicle doors opened inwards, but the gap between the toilet and the door was a few inches. To open and close the door, you had to wedge yourself between the door and the wall. It seems a silly design, when you could rehinge the doors and the issue would be eliminated. I am not a slim woman, but if someone bigger than myself tried to go to the bathroom, they may struggle to close the door. All while in evening wear! It definitely wasn't nice having to stand over the toilet to get in and out of...

Ambience: very good. Service: Average. They charge discretionary service charge . I felt like they didn't look after us that well. No one came to the table to check on us once the food was served. We were with kids and they took ages to clear the plates after we finished eating. Kids were dropping the cutlery and faffing around. There were only two tables being served at the time. Food: now the main bit why would be at this restaurant. Taste was average nothing special. Portions were extremely small.. couple of the main dish sizes were similar to a 10 course starter menu , but its only a 3 course menu. If you r just ordering the main,it's hardly going to be enough. One of us ordered a monktail - really small portion of fish, but the fact that there was a thick piece of bone in the tail made it even smaller. I had sea bream with Pak choy. The greens were averagely cooked - very chewy. The Kiev was alright. Desert: this is the saving grace, all good portions and it was good. Drinks: if you ever want to order pepsi - please don't - cost 6 pounds a glass. That's the second most ridiculous price I had to pay for a drink. The fresh fruit juice from the menu costs less than a pint of pepsi. This was the most disappointing bit. (The first most ridiculous thing was, when I had to pay for a glass of hot water in another restaurant) My review comes down to the positioning of this restaurant and the bang for buck one gets. the menu , ambience and more importantly the price gives the impression that it's a luxury restaurant but what came out of it left us with a not so satisfied feeling. For the price they charged this place...

The reason why they get a 4 star is because you get lunch and entrance into Portmeirion for an excellent promo deal. You get a 2 course lunch for two for £60, when entrance alone into Portmeirion £20 so for an extra £10 you get lunch! You can choose either an appetizer and main or main and dessert. My partner and I choose each set so we could share. You must book in advance. Now the castle dining room was quite fancy and I was not dressed for it since we would be wandering around afterwards, so if you’re able to, dress smart casual. I love seafood but wish there was a warning on the menu stating the mussels would contain lil pearls/sand. I really did not enjoy crunching down/politely removing these bits from my mouth. The flavours from the mussels were marvelous. The fish and shrimp were also nice. My partner’s steak looked great except for the sauce beside it looking very unappetizing (though tasted good). He loved dessert and it jiggled! I probably would never dine here alone for food, not my kind of scene. So for a promo...

A fantastic building in a fantastic setting with fantastic food. A good range of options on the lunch menu, and I opted for the Guinea fowl terrine to start, moules frites for mains (of course, when in north-west wales) and crème brûlée for dessert. All were excellent, and the service very quick too for a table of six. My constructive criticism here - the service charge was added to the bill, which always makes diners feel uncomfortable to take it off. When you have food and service as excellent as this was, the customer will be compelled to tip - especially with the tourist trade in this area - and even tip more than was automatically added to the bill. However, the price of entry into Portmeirion village certainly softened the blow, and was a very nice touch.
