The Gate Inn — Restaurant in Rotherham

We decided to give The Gate another shot after our last bad experience last year. . . It was my birthday but was not the best idea to go here....

I reserved a table booking in the afternoon for a table reserve later on for a birthday meal.

I had a copy of the table reservation booking through email.

When we arrived and I asked about the table.... the lady behind the bar went to check to come back and tell us "nothing had come through but it doesn't always print through same day bookings"..... why have the feature available to do?!? I didn't believe this to be true as for the main reason.. I know this system of table reservation!!! Turn the online system off if this is the case. I even showed my email reservation which got told "it's no good you can just find a table"!!

We got there and it was busy with locals drinking but we went to look for a table and the only one decent table we could ask for was in the front small room on table 5!!

It wasn't very clean unfortunately!

So after this unfortunate incident already not the best of starts... but we found a table and went to order through the qr code.... we know the table was dirty and not cleaned as the table qr code had stains over it!

We ordered starters and mains. Starters took a long time to come out ... nachos and boneless chicken ... surprisingly nice!

We then waited over an hour for our mains!!!! Chicken fajitas.... was OK but not amazing. Chicken skewers ... well.... chips were stale... veg were not great and chicken skewer although alright wasn't the best.... there was definitely no sizzle for a sizzle plate or sizzle restaurant.

The lady who served us on the bar finished at 7pm as she left but the young blonde lady who served the food had NO CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS....resting sour face, no interaction with us and there was no follow up on our meals.

What we did find out as she sat on the table next to us (with who we assume one was a manager), had a lovely burger and chips to eat there and for lunch had a container of gravy with roast potatoes which were stale ... not the kind of thing you want to hear about the food in the same establishment.

The food is OK The service once again - not great!! The standards - poor.

To be honest I think after this second attempt we will probably be giving it a miss.

Try it though.... everyone should give it their own opinion!

We might just have been unlucky. Not the best birthday visit for us all... but won't use for...

Arrived to this establishment with my partner and child. Looked at the menu and went to the bar to order our food. Starter came the garlic bread went from barely cooked to being chargrilled just the taste of burnt food breaded mushrooms were like rocks. Main meals came. My order was a 5⁰z rump steak with chips flat mushroom grilled tomatoe and diane sauce. The steak tasted burnt the grilled tomatoe was cold as though it was out of the fridge same with the mushroom. The onions were as thoigh they had been soaked in water. The chips were horrible and the diane sauce looked like baby food and did not taste like diane sauce. Daughter ordered mash peas and fish fingers was informed they dont come til Sunday so opted for chicken nuggets which were like rock. My partner ordered the dirty stack which was very poor quality to say it was a signature stack burger. The milk that my daughter asked for was warm. The chef approached us shortly after to see if meals were ok. I nicely stated my issues she then informed me she would get a manager. The manager came to our table and explained what we had previously told the chef regarding the meal. He asked if I wanted the meal to be remade. However, I had gone past the point so I politely declined the offer and was asked if I wanted a refund which I accepted. He then went away and the head chef came back with my money for my meal. She started to clear the table my partner was still eating his burger and she took his plate from infront of him. The service was disgusting and I vow not to enter that...

Normally its good but this was far from it.

Been there a few times and I would normally say the service and food is great.

However just been there for lunch today....

I don't know the persons name but she had short grey and a bit spikey hair..... WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!!!

Went to the bar and she didn't know where anything was on the till.... she moaned about the manager and that she's not been trained .... I could see from the other side of the bar I was on where everything was so I talked her through it.

When I asked for a receipt which was never offered she huffed at me and chucked it towards me as if it was a massive inconvenience.... im pretty confident that every customer should be given their receipt of purchase???!!!!!

We then waited for the starters .... they came out.... I asked if the sauce which was included in the food order was coming out and she had clearly forgotten... Once again huffed at.....

Our mains came out .... we asked if we could have some cutterly and met with another huff as we didn't have any..... we asked also if we could have some condiments (never turned up)

She clearly is not having the best day either that or she didn't like me and my partner and we felt really discriminated against..... she didn't bother to ask us if everything was alright but went round everyone else.... so rude.

I am shocked at the absolute horrific service..... won't go again for a whilst but If I do...
