Travelled 1hr15 while on holiday in Coldingham, for a birthday meal and was well worth the journey. We booked for 6 o'clock on a Friday and we were welcomed by a lovely waiter and didn’t need to say the name of the booking, they knew.
The restaurant had a lovely vibe and when we were taken to our table, they had provided a birthday ballon for us which was a nice touch.
The service was excellent, the waiter was friendly and also engaged in some banter about football after noticing our accent. Every waiter looked smart and well presented. We all felt very welcome as guests.
Drinks menu was spot on and the foods itself was absolutely banging. Both meat ‘Base Camp’ currys came well rated from our family, along with the madras which had a good kick. The lamb in the madras fell apart. We also got a good amount of meat in each dish, which we all commented on as a brilliant thing. The price definitely matched the quantity and quality. King prawns were huge!
The pickle tray was out of this world. It had a good mix of spice and flavour. We all said we wished our local home one did them like 1953!
In the booking notes we mentioned it was for a birthday but didn’t think much of it but there was a real effort put in (as mentioned before the ballon) and also brought over a complimentary pudding and sang happy birthday. We didn’t ask for any of it so it was a really lovely touch and added to our experience.
Probably the best Indian/Nepalese restaurant we have visited. We all rated it a 10/10.
We would highly recommend it. Please Please visit if you can. And thank you so so much 1953 for a...
Read moreI had an incredible dining experience at 1963, a hidden gem that beautifully blends the rich flavours of Indian and Nepalese cuisine.
We started with the lamb chops, which were tender, perfectly marinated, and grilled to perfection - packed with flavour and just the right level of spice. The chilli paneer was a standout - crispy on the outside, soft inside, and tossed in a deliciously tangy and spicy sauce. The chicken achari brought a unique kick with its bold pickled spices, and paired wonderfully with the soft, fluffy garlic naan that soaked up every drop of flavour.
To drink, I went for a non-alcoholic Blue Lagoon mocktail - refreshing, vibrant, and just the palate cleanser I needed between bites. They also had a wide selection of other drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, so there's definitely something for everyone.
The service was warm and attentive, and the atmosphere was welcoming with a modern yet cosy feel. Whether you're after a casual dinner or something a bit special, 1963 is well worth a visit. I’ll definitely be returning to explore more...

Absolutely beautiful meal, outstanding venue & the best service I've had in many a year. The staff were fantastic & so polite. The presentation of the food matched the quality of the flavours. Simply magnificent, what a great experience...I'd love to go back again. However... I enjoyed the food & the ambience so much I decided I needed a wee momento of my night & saved the staff from washing up my beer glass by slipping it into my jacket pocket...oops Again the staff dealt with my stupidity with panache & informed me that if I'd wanted a glass I need only ask. I'm so embarrassed but also overjoyed that the front of house manager wasn't confrontational & remained polite & professional. I'd like to apologise for my behaviour & also say thank you for your discretion!
1953 is superb! Please can I visit again! (I can being my own beer...
