Decided to try again after a very disappointing meal on 2nd May for my mum's birthday. Looks like it depends on which chef is on as to how good your meal is. Tonight's special was barbecue chicken...oooh i will have that. Barbecue chicken turns out to be Hunters Chicken with very little sauce....dont like bacon or cheese and would never have ordered if it said Hunters Chicken. Told the waitress and she removed the word Barbecue from the chalkboard menu. So...after removing the bacon and the cheese instead of getting a nice barbecue chicken with hot barbecue sauce I got a butterfly chicken battered within an inch of its life...literally...with a COLD barbecue sauce which I had to ask for to dip it in. Chicken was dry as a bone, chips were hollow and burnt....partner ordered Balmoral chicken to which my mum had ordered a few weeks ago and was disappointed in....again...disappointment...chicken was dry and the veg was hard as a brick. Chef ' Andy' I think his name is popped his head out at one point to complain that the word barbecue had been removed from the specials board. I said to him that the meal was terrible and all he said was that he was sorry to hear that and then disappeared back into the kitchen. Never asked me why I thought it was terrible or offered to give me anything else or remove it from my bill...the only saving grace they have is their lovely bar staff. Will definitely be calling ahead now to see which chef is on before I spend any more hard earned...
Read moreI'm sure there's a black bull in almost every town going and I've often wondered if you could have a sister pub called the harlequin heffer? Anyhoos, I really liked the food in this place and the prices are very reasonable. Service was excellent and the lassie who dealt with us was very attentive and polite. My only complaints were that the place could have done with a makeover. Maybe not a 60 minute makeover but definitely worth a bit of investment - it's very dated and drab. Also, we had a wee one with us and asked for a highchair. What arrived was one of the grottiest highchairs going. The gaps between the sides and the seat were chock full of crud. Annoyingly, my daughter just loved getting her finger down there and showing me some rank substance. I think steam steriliser are the words that should spring to mind... or perhaps highchair bonfire.
Anyway, if you don't have wee monsters with you, definitely a good place to have a drink,...
Read moreI am a regular visitor for a meal here, the food's good and staff are friendly, and that was the reason I suggested to my aunt and cousin that we all have lunch here today. My aunt had the Lemon sole parcel with new potatoes and fresh veg. My cousin had Balmoral chicken with new potatoes and fresh veg with whiskey sauce, and I had Macaroni cheese and garlic bread. All the food was freshly cooked and tasted delicious. Our compliments to the chef, (sorry I didn't get your name). Needless to say we had to sample the desserts as well, which were delightful. Donald, Lynda and Lauren made us so welcome as usual. A lovely time was had by all, so much so that my aunt and cousin (who live in Edinburgh) have decided that when they have their lunches out, they are heading to Mid Calder to Black Bull! Thank you everyone once again for a wonderful meal and a...
