I made an order before checking the food standards agency to check if they had a food hygiene information scheme pass. I usually check first but I used to order from food lodge quite regularly, too regularly, before they sold to new owners and just didn't think at first. But glad I did check.
They were last inspected on 10th October 2024 and were given an improvement required rating. Which means they didn't meet the basic standards for food safety, meaning eating here there may be a risk of foodborne illnesses.
So naturally I called up to cancel the order and get a refund. Feeling upset with myself for not checking the food standards agency first.
The reason I'm bothering to leave a review at all is because of the phone calls. Usually having not eaten anything I wouldn't have any reason to leave a review. And so many takeaways in Penicuik don't have a food hygiene pass that if I was to spend my time leaving reviews at places I don't eat, it would be a very long waste of my time.
When I explained I was calling up because I had just checked and they don't have a food safety pass on the food standards agency website the person seemed confused and then insisted that they did have one that they got on the 20th of January (or in January sometime from 20th to now but I can't remember the exact date given it was a very rushed call) I said oh that's good because I'm hungry so if you have the pass can you send a photo of the certificate. The person then insisted they would just refund me and hung up while I was speaking. I had to call back to get a time frame for the refund.
Now maybe they did have a food hygiene pass in January and maybe the food standards agency just hasn't updated their website and the person was just busy and couldn't be bothered dealing with me. But if that's the case, rude. And also why wouldn't you want to prove to a customer that your restaurant is safe to eat at? But okay. If bad customer service is their thing, fine.
But I'm suspecting with how quickly the refund was insisted upon and I was hung up on that it's quite possible they were lying about having recently received a pass. It's easy to prove if they weren't, just take a photo of the certificate and pop it on here as the owners.
So yeah I'm leaving a bad review for the way I was treated on the phone. It was a phone call that lasted 1m 5s, genuinely 20s more of their time to not hang up on me while I was speaking and there would be no new 1 star review. Eat here at your own risk. I now have to wait a week to get...
Read moreI recently moved to Penicuik and felt a sudden need for a food delivery this evening. Not wanting a Dominoes I turned to Google maps and searched for "healthy food delivery near me" Zoomed in on the map and this place was the first I looked at. I clicked on some reviews which encouraged me to look at the menu. The menu/order option within maps took me to a nice smart looking ordering page and I easily placed an order.
Received my confirmation email with expected delivery time and thanks.
The order arrived 30 mins earlier than I expected much to my delight as I was starving.
The food was simply delicious! I have eaten Chinese food all over the world over multiple decades and have had Chinese and Taiwanese girlfriends in the past, both they and their families treated me to their delicious cooking many times.
Tonight's meal was definitely in my top five Chinese meals that I have eaten in my life.
I had no idea Penicuik was hiding such a treasure!
Thank you,
I will be ordering again and recommending...
Read moreOrdered chicken chow mein and shredded beef in chilli sauce.
Chow mein - soggy noodles, tasteless, overcooked rubbery chicken.
Shredded beef in chilli sauce - more like shredded beef in ginger sauce.. there was almost a full piece of ginger in it.. no chilli at all and really quite horrible. On the brighter side the beef had a good texture.. i guess ha.
Will not be ordering from here again, first and last time.
Out of the places in Penicuik i'd say golden bell and jade palace are a...
