Gilmartin's Bakery - Stewarton
Location: 2 Avenue Square, Stewarton, Kilmarnock KA3 5AB
Atmosphere: Gilmartin's Bakery boasts a modern aesthetic with warm touches, accentuated by comfortable IKEA furniture. The ambiance was clean, inviting, and complemented by a relaxing backdrop of "Lofi" music, enhancing the aroma of freshly baked pastries.
Menu and Food Quality: Our breakfast experience, priced at £10.50 for the "Full Stack," showcased ingredients of commendable quality. However, the execution fell short. The "Poached" eggs were overcooked, pancakes showed signs of burning, and the beans were lukewarm. The price seemed somewhat disproportionate to the meal's overall execution, especially considering the quality of the dishes.
Service: While the staff was generally friendly, their readiness for customer interactions left something to be desired. The two waitstaff seemed ill-prepared for anything beyond taking coffee orders. Handling customer dissatisfaction proved challenging, with shortcomings in addressing even basic queries. The serving waiter appeared hesitant, almost skittish, potentially indicating new employment.
Price: The food quality fell below the expected standard, especially considering the relatively higher pricing.
Special Features: Gilmartin's Bakery stands out with its tastefully arranged interior and an impressive assortment of cakes and baked goods. Notably, they offer locally sourced products and feature "Dear Green" coffee, an appreciated touch.
Overall Experience: Gilmartin's Bakery excels as a spot for enjoying coffee and cake. However, for a more substantial meal, our experience was marred by inconsistencies. Given the distance and the availability of other cafes nearby, such as Gro Coffee and Scott's, we are unlikely to revisit. Nonetheless, for locals, popping in for a delightful cake and coffee...

Service - staff appeared new/to lack training, knowledge or experience in customer communication and managing tables. When asked what bread was available for sandwiches (not toasted) the answer was we just have one type of sour dough. Asked if suitable for sandwiches advised, not really it’s better toasted as it can be chewy. No one came during food to ask of it was ok, no one came after we were finished to clear plates take further drinks/cake orders. Only on the third request (over 30 minutes) did the most confident of the team working take our order. When cakes & drinks came the delay was so long we asked for the bill as we were up against time by this point. Cakes were brought with no cutlery - had to go to window and get our own. Re paying: Asked card or cash we said both as we were splitting the bill, one card, one cash. The card machine was brought along and a card payment taken (had to ask how much the bill was as not told). The server moved away and I asked if they wanted my £20 (50% of bill) they said ‘oh sorry this machine can’t spilt I took the full amount from the card.’
Quality of food - coconut & something soup was nice. Toasted haggis, cheese and sweet chilly toastie was not. Bread edges were so hard baked unable to cut/bite, rubbery cheese.
Scone was cold (no offer to heat or toast), butter so cold it would spread.
Despite seeing at least 3 servers the cafe appeared short staffed with no manager to help the young team. If there were staff shortages the best way to win over customers is to be up front, apologise for wait times and explain staff are learning. It’s been a long time since I’ve had such a poor experience of both service and quality of food, such a shame as it...
Read moreUsed to come here a few times a week to get a coffee, little treat when I was working from home, but no more. You can ever see my previous review. I've given it a few months, hoping it was just a settling in period for the new owners, unfortunately it seems to be getting worse. The service is terrible now, the wait time for take away is excessively long, and it's not because there's a big queue but it's seemingly because the staff don't know how to use the till or are focused on other things. Sometimes they barely acknowledge you, other times they forget about you after you've paid and are waiting. Even had it that they forget about you once they've seated you and you've ordered. I have not had one positive experience, recently. I have only given so many chances because it's the only decent coffee in town...even if the prices...
