Have been going to the Peking Palace for family special occasions for a long, long time. This was our first visit since being under new management. Read some pretty poor reviews before the visit, but I'm going to put them to bed.
Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff. It was quiet as we were in early around 1700. We were quickly sat in a booth and had our drinks order with us very promptly.
My wife and I chose from the Pre Theatre Set meal which was fairly extensive and well priced at three courses for £18. To feed the kids we picked a couple of winners from the A la carte menu.
For starters we had Peking ribs, mini spring rolls, and chicken noodle soup. All of which were prepared to a very high standard and arrived in good time. I maybe should have asked for a full portion of the ribs as they were that good, two each between my son and I didn't seem like enough. But they were delicious.
For mains we had Salt and Pepper Crispy Chicken (no veg) (kids), Crispy Shredded Chicken in Peking sauce, Chicken Satay Skewers, Fried Rice and Chips between four.
We did think initially that the salt and pepper chicken portion was on the small side, but it ended up being an appetiser portion for the boys to share. For the record, they still didn't polish it off. Crispy Shredded Chicken was top notch, very crispy and coated with a lovely Peking style sauce. Satay Skewers were slightly spicier than I remember, but this is not a bad thing. I quite liked the level of heat. Skewers cooked perfectly with a great texture and extremely delicious. Fried rice was very tasty and kept warm in it's serving dish, it which I loved. The chips were very well cooked and crispy too.
To finish off we had two banana fritters, a pineapple fritter and a bowl of ice cream. Fritters were excellent. Crispy batter with plenty of syrup over them.
With a can of juice each we were £70. Which I think for three courses and full bellies for four is pretty reasonable nowadays.
Yes, the decor could be modernised a bit, but the restaurant has been de cluttered and seems more spacious and roomy. I find it quite nostalgic coming back to the same restaurant time after time and remembering all the great family meals I've had in this place.
Hopefully it keeps going and we can enjoy it for years to come.
My family and I would highly recommend you pop in and...
Read moreBeing coming here for a few years now for business lunches , always quite but food delicious and staff very nice , so my mum thought it would be nice to book a family get together for Christmas Day as my brother and nephew who live in France where coming home , so she booked for 14 of us , we arrived at 3.45 for our 4 o’clock sitting we where left waiting for 45 minutes to be seated , my mum is 79 and my dad is 90 , finally seated , after 20 mins we asked could we have a drink , finally the starter arrived at 5.30 , then waited another hour for the main courses to come out , first 9 meals came out , the Brussel sprouts where frozen inside, and the turkey was covered with the most horrendous sauce , another 10 mins before the steak came out , and my mum sat another 15 mins waiting for hers , we had already finished ours , asked 4 times where was her dinner , only to be rudely told I’m only a waiter , yeah now for dessert it arrived at 6.45 again only half came out , staff totally stressed , eventually coming out with the rest of the desserts and placing them at the bottom of the table , for us to give out ourselves , once they where finished after 20mins , we thought let’s get the bill never mind the tea and coffees, the meal minus drinks should had been £772 pounds , as they added a 10% service charge , 😂😂 we did complain and the manager removed the service charge , never again totally ruined our day , worse dinning experience EVER, another table actually cheered and wished everyone a happy new year when they finally got...
Read moreI've not used this place for at least 20 year, but used to be a regular when I last lived in the area, so when I saw a Facebook post on a local community page that they had re-opened, I thought I'd give it a go. It was, without a doubt, the worst chinese takeway meal I've ever eaten. The word "bland" just doesn't cover it adequately. One of our mains was Kung Po pork - it came in a really watery sauce with no spice or kick to it and the meat was fatty. Our other main, a king prawn meal was equally bland, although the prawns were adequate in texture. The sweetcorn and crab soup, didn't actually have crab in it, so one for trading standards to ponder. Having just noticed the other recent poor reviews when I camer to write this, I regret not checking them out sooner. I'll be giving this place a wide berth from now on as it's...
