I really didn't expect to find a café open in Keith on a freezing but dry Sunday morning, so was delighted when the filling station pointed me in the direction of the Square Deal.
To be honest, any port in a storm would have sufficed at that point whilst awaiting grandson finishing his sports training, but the Square Roots went far beyond that. A warm welcome from the cheerful young lady in charge along with delicious newly baked scones and a mouth watering range of cakes put the icing on the cake as it were. If, like me, you're a typical Scot with a sweet tooth, you won't be disappointed.
The café is deceptively spacious and has a homely feel with a gratifying lack of plastic furniture around. Their lunch menu looked equally attractive, with hot and cold dishes to supplement the expected sandwiches and burgers. Rather unexpectedly, the establishment was licenced, with rather a good wine list featuring lesser known growers. The only downside was that wines by the glass were rare. Still, I could take the bottle home afterwards!
Looking for a downside was almost impossible, at least on a quiet morning. Even when busy, I imagine the able staff would have little difficulty coping. Now, having read the foregoing, I should point out perhaps that I have no family or financial interest in the café.
Finally, there is a notice suggesting that customers book. I imagine that might well...
Read moreMy husband and I had soup, and filled roll deal. The servers seemed in a hurry, to take orders, even though there were empty tables. Cullen skink was quite watery, but tasted OK. French onion soup, tasted OK. Decent bowlful, but very oily. There was a layer of oil on the surface. The filled rolls, were tasty. Good amount of filling to roll ratio. Salad, and filling nice and fresh. Good choice on the menu, quite expensive though. Soup and roll about £7-£8. Tea £1.50-£2.50. Another couple came in after us, left without ordering anything, as it was too expensive. It closes quite early, which is a shame. It's on the flat, so accessible for physically impaired. There is a decent disabled toilet on site. Didn't have cake or pudding, as had already spent enough. Did see some cakes on show, which looked good, but can't...
Read moreNice little homely type cafe, accessible with room between the tables for getting through as well. There is also limited seating outside. The coffee was lovely and the food surpassed what we had anticipated. The portions were reasonable as well. We did not use the toilet facilities so cannot comment on them. The service was very good, the waitress ensured we were catered to as needed. The reason for 4 and not t stars was the wait we had, which for me, on a hard seat without sufficient padding, became particularly painful as the wait lengthened. I had to take extra pain killers because of it. Otherwise, a highly recommended cafe, and one I would like to visit again, but I shall book the food in advance and take my own...
