The Sugar Bowl is a bustling little cafe and gift shop in the heart of Kingussie. The staff are young, friendly and efficient and keep the whole place running smoothly. The atmosphere is always upbeat, with a lively feeling to it even when it is not busy...must be the staff of 20 somethings that create this vibe. :) It is a great place to drop in alone or meet up with friends - you'll never feel out of place as the atmosphere is so welcoming without being intrusive. Situated on two levels adjoined by three or four steps, even those with mild mobility challenges (walking stick) can get about. You can enter either via the High Street or via King Street, which is a side street ideal entrance for those in wheelchairs as it is level to the pavement. There is good parking at Ardvonie Car Park at the bottom of King Street. At both entrances to the cafe, on a sunny day there are a few tables and chairs on the pavement so the sunlovers amongst us can make the most of the Highland sun and bask. :) Inside there is a range of different seating to choose from, settees, tables and chairs, a higher table and bar stools and a small round table with a couple of comfortable bucket seats. There is a broad menu to suit most preferences, a whole range of coffees, herbal teas to take away or have in, and cold drinks to choose from too. Prices are between £1-10 per person. The food is great. Wonderful cooked breakfasts or lunch. A particular thanks to Adam who went out of his way to go shopping to get lemons for my Sparkling Water today, so I could have my drink with ice and lemon. Now that's what I call service. :) - I'll be back, as will most of...
Read moreThis restaurant is not kid-friendly. While they do have kids menu, we found them very hostile to us with children. Despite there being plenty of seating in the area that’s kid and dog friendly, we were forced outside and finally allowed in when it started to rain. I gave it 2 starts instead of 1 because the kids liked the food. But the staff was really rude and inattentive - we live locally and I’m really used to friendly service.
The bigger issue was that I’m allergic to dairy. I explained this clearly and asked pointed questions. I was assured my meal was dairy free. When I eat dairy, I get a very specific feeling/pain in my stomach. After a couple of bites of my sandwich, it was clear there was dairy. They swore up and down there was no dairy. But I’m now doubled over. The last time I had this pain was 4 months ago when I was accidentally served dairy. I’ve not been served dairy since then and I’ve been brilliant. If you have a dairy allergy, you’ll get what I mean.
I can cope with rude service, but I can’t cope with my stomach being bad for a few days.
If you’re a group of adults with no kids and no allergies, this is a...
