PizzaExpress — Restaurant in South Oxfordshire

I love pizza express and have never had cause to complain, until this evening. Henley is my local restaurant and I usually find the staff really friendly and helpful, but today I was really disappointed. I had made a reservation for a party of five and the restaurant was the quietest I’ve ever seen it (maybe five tables in use). There were three waiting staff. We were seated at a table without cutlery and napkins, and with chocolate stains on it from previous diners. After ordering we had to wait over 40 mins for five mains. When we saw a waitress, I said that our food was taking a long time, and her response was, ‘what do you want, a discount?’ I was flabbergasted. I replied, ‘no, just our order’. She then replied, ‘we had 40 take away pizzas to do’ and avoided us for the rest of the evening and we had to go and find her to pay our bill. When the male waiter came to clear our plates and asked how it was I explained that after waiting over 40 minutes the food wasn’t hot. He didn’t seem too bothered either and simply said they only have one chef. The third worker was dressed in a shirt, as opposed to a uniform, so I would guess he was the manager. We had no contact with him, even when he was sat near us playing on his phone while we grumbled to the waiter. Surely any half decent manager would have intervened at that point and taken over. No. This guy was clearly avoiding us also. I am gutted. A life long fan of pizz exp as a trusted easy choice, I am left never wanting to return to that restaurant in case the service is that poor again. After ordering through Deliveroo I have had a good service but before you look away from my review be rest assured. ITS PIZZA EXPRESSES FAULT!! Not Deliveroo’s.

From the start of ordering from pizza express. Firstly: ordering off their menu online, the pizzas arrived without the toppings they offered, for example, no spinach on a chicken pizza, or no side when ordered. Secondly, pizza arriving not even sliced which sounds petty but this is what they provide and did not do. Thirdly and more to the point, pizza ordered and I phoned in to explain how I wasn’t happy in the past and was prepared to order again to give a third chance. Spoke with the General Manager directly! She explained they will carry out all work to the highest standard. The pizza arrived crumpled up and stuffed into the box. They claimed it was the rough delivery from Deliveroo which you can’t imagine as even if the box was turned up-side down in transportation the condition of it would never end up like this. This was retaliation from the staff I imagine as I complained about a previous order being sent out without the toppings ordered or the side dish of food. This is so un-professional and guess what they won’t be getting away with this. The head office will be getting a full complaint. Ordered via Deliveroo 22 Dec 2023. Usual order (same as normal) yet all was awful and inedible. Deliveroo refunded (credit to account) but we hate wasting food and this lot was binned. Our Smoky BBQ Chicken pizza was tough, dry and extremely spicy. So spicy that my ‘heat loving partner’ couldn’t eat it. It’s never been spicy before. Our classic Margherita Pizza was overcooked and tasted bitter. The Garlic bread w/Mozzarella was cold and really doughy. The Lemon & Herb Chicken wings were horrid, seemed uncooked and tasteless. The Halloumi Bites were dry and burnt. We tried calling the restaurant multiple times from two different phones but they never answered. We haven’t ordered again or returned to the restaurant despite it being within walking distance and having an App full of points/freebies. I’ve no idea what went wrong that evening but it was a complete mess.
