The “India Gate” to Disappointment! (minus 100) If there was an award for how NOT to run a restaurant, India Gate in St Albans would win it hands down.
After waiting over an hour, I was starving and wondering what was taking so long, only to find out from the poor delivery driver (yes, not the restaurant, the delivery driver) that India Gate had cancelled my order because they were “too busy.”
How thoughtful! Imagine cancelling someone’s dinner because you can’t be bothered to cook?? and then not even having the decency to call or message. Bravo on the customer service, truly next level indifference! 👏
They clearly believe communication and empathy are optional in hospitality. Maybe they should rename the place to “India Wait” or “India Late” — at least that would warn people in advance.
I stayed hungry for over an hour, completely ignored, and they didn’t even bother with a “sorry.” The only person who had any manners was the delivery driver, who was kind enough to call and break the news that the restaurant couldn’t handle doing their job.
If this is how India Gate treats paying customers, I dread to imagine how they treat complaints. Utterly shameless, unprofessional, and careless.
I’m still waiting for some form of compensation, though I doubt they’ll bother, empathy doesn’t seem to be on the menu here.
Save yourself the time, the hunger, and the frustration. Avoid this place like the plague. There are plenty of restaurants in St Albans that actually respect their customers, this one’s...
Read moreWe tried the new India Gate restaurant in Redbourn on Saturday night. We didn't book and turned up at 8pm to find it really busy, almost chaotic (people waiting for collections, others placing odrers for collections and the phone ringing for deliveries, plus an already full restaurant) but i was prepared to overlook that as it had only been open for a couple of weeks.
They have done a good job with the refurbishment and some nice lighting and features, the toilets were also spotless!
Later we spoke to the new owner and discovered that the local council had been in that evening to complete their checks which had delayed their service.
The menu is not like your normal 'run of the mill' Indian so don't expect to see your normal Chicken Madras or Beef Vindaloo - although I did hear some people asking for things not on the menu and they seemed happy to oblige.
Talking to the brother of the owner, he explained that the menu is authentic food from Delhi and the same as their other London restaurant.
The food was fantastic and the service was also very good. One point to note, they don't have draft beer and so its bottled beers (good selection) and I was surprised to see a pint glass turn up... its nice to see a restaurant not ripping people off for bottled beer! (Big plus point!) Overall very good and will go...
Read moreI recently dined at INDIA GATE and opted for the mutton curry on the bone paired with garlic naan. From the moment the dish arrived, the aroma was irresistible, promising an authentic Indian culinary experience.
The mutton curry was beautifully presented, with tender pieces of meat simmered to perfection in a rich, flavorful sauce. Each bite of mutton melted in my mouth, demonstrating the long cooking time that had allowed the spices to seep deep into the meat. The sauce was a delightful balance of aromatic spices, subtle heat, and a hint of sweetness, which complemented the natural flavors of the mutton beautifully.
The garlic naan was the perfect accomplice to the curry. It was freshly baked, soft, and slightly chewy, with a generous amount of garlic that added an extra layer of flavor. The naan’s warm, fluffy texture was ideal for scooping up the hearty curry, making each bite a satisfying experience.
Overall, the combination of mutton curry on the bone with garlic naan at INDIA GATE was a feast for the senses. The dish not only satisfied my craving for authentic Indian cuisine but also left a lasting impression. I would highly recommend this dish to anyone looking for a flavorful and hearty meal. Don’t miss out on this...
