This probably seems harsh but unfortunately we need to consider the overall experience.
On arrival to the hotel it took around 15-20 minutes for someone to check us in despite ringing the bell on reception several times, using the phone to speak to a staff member to let them know we were at reception and then also speaking to someone at the bar who also said someone will be with us shortly.
When we eventually got to the room, we were tired after travelling and spending a day at the nearby Alton Towers and immediately when walking to our room through the corridor we were greeted with a musty smell, we get to our room and the door knob is damaged on the door, hanging off and when we entered the room, there was again an overwhelming smell of dampness coming from the room so we immediately opened up the window to freshen up the air in the room.
After unpacking and settling the kids down, we started to have a little horror shock at the condition of the room and I have attached pictures to this review.
The bathroom had loads of mould around the bath and along the tiles in the room and the floor was seperating from the wall in the bathroom, the ceiling was filthy and very dirty and the door handle looked like it had seen better days and felt dirty to touch.
The radiator in the room did not work and looked like it had been taken out of a scrap heap as it was so rusty if a child cut themselves on that they'd need some tetanus shots.
There were some questionable stains / marks on the carpet which didn't look pleasing at all.
The ceiling was full of cob webs and again the marks on the ceiling followed through into the main room and the surfaces in the room (bedside units and dresser table) were not in very good condition and had a certain 'smell' emitting from them.
The window was very poor in the room, it does not block out any outside noise so all you can hear is traffic and early morning there are delivery lorries immediately outside the window.
The general area, did not feel very safe as when I was collecting items from the car there were homeless people rummaging through the overflowing bins outside smashing bottles from the bins on the ground.
The staff we spoke to were friendly enough and really nice people and its a shame the hotel has not had any investment and is in such a dire state. The Hungry Horse restaurant is lovely, food is delicious and friendly staff, only downside here is we were left waiting ages for dessert to be brought out and had to ask for it 3 times before receiving it.
The morning full English breakfast was nice although portions are a bit small compared to other hotels which offer a buffet style breakfast for the same price.
The bed was very comfy and the linen was nice and clean and the location was good for Alton Towers as it only took 10-15 minutes to get back to the hotel and the roads are not busy.
Easy access to the motorway to get back home and a local Tesco opposite to get the forgotten essentials or some last minute things.
Would love to visit again, but not in the hotels current state, it does need some modernisation and investment by Greene King as it is so...
Read moreI’m only giving 2 stars based on my 2 trips here recently
Both times my food has come out cold in the middle. Complained and food was taken away thinking I would get a fresh order of it only for it to come back out a few minutes later with all the sauces I had put on prior, blazing hot which to me it was obviously put in a microwave to be heated up.
Food is mediocre anyway and will not be returning
The two stars is only because my husbands meal was ok as our children’s meals were fine.
But you expect a curry to be cooked fresh and hot not have the chicken chunks ice cold, and the second time I returned the burrito was hard and The filling was cold
The only time I would think of returning was if we just popped in for a drink as the atmosphere seemed quite good
Adding to this review and have taken a star off. If I could I would give it literally 0 stars.
Ended up going here again for my mother’s birthday last week there was 7 of us 2 being children.
My food yet again was awful I ordered the Perinperi chicken fajitas. My chicken was soggy and bland and the veggies that came with the chicken was unseasoned soggy and had absolutely nothing resembling peri peri on it. It was just like half an onion chopped up and some peppers. Are a few mouthfuls and I couldn’t eat it anymore. My dads burger was salty and very very dry with literally a teaspoon of cheese on. So he couldn’t eat his My sisters curry had a hair in so she had hers sent back for a different one And my daughter who’s 4 and eats anything had one bite of her burger and couldn’t eat anymore.
We got a refund for them meals. But honestly every time I’ve been there has been a problem and only wen Again last week as it was my mums birthday and it’s where was chosen.
And to top it off there was a bunch of drunk what I can only describe as childish teenagers who were loud and swearing when I had our 2 young children wih us. I politely asked them if they wouldn’t mind not swearing as I don’t want our children picking up on it which they agreed too. Only to be shushed by them loudly every time I walked past them. They were clearly waiting for a member of the bar staff to get off work. But how is it a “family” establishment now when the staff allow potty mouthed ignorant teenagers swear and make a scene around your children.
It’s gone so far downhill it just needs to be totally under the hill hiding for no one else to have to displeasure of stepping foot in there
I can honestly say I would never step foot in here again.AVOID THIS...
Read moreWe visited here Friday night 11th April for a night away from the kids for our anniversary via a gift we’d received through virgin experience day gift voucher as it was the perfect location so we weren’t too far incase we were needed. To begin with it took a small amount of time for someone to appear to check us in as there’s no buzzer/bell to get attention. We were then given our key and pointed where to go.. room was as expected after reading reviews. Only flaw was a bit of mould on the bathroom ceiling. Bed was a tolerable comfiness. We noticed you could order food to the room. So being as we rarely get time alone and neither are the type to want to socialise we gave it a go.. we ordered at 16:37 our mains were with us within 15 minutes.. all good. Food was 2/5 stars. We then waited a bit (not having done this before) expecting within so long someone would come up to see if we’d finished/fetch our desserts we’d ordered as you would say in a restaurant but had nothing. So we ordered a cup of tea thinking it might trigger the dessert around 17:48, cup of tea arrived nothing else. asked the person if they could send our desserts and if they minded removing the plates from our main ‘I’ll let the kitchen know for you’ waited again for an hour and still nothing. Went to the desk and asked who we assume was the manager if we could have them and around 19:07 we finally received them. So a good nearly 3 hours after ordering… I know it fells like a silly complaint on behalf of our laziness really but if a service is offered/advertised then surely there should be some sort of routine in place to follow? If this was someone in the room with difficulties for getting around they couldn’t be up and down chasing for their food especially when it’s stairs only access. During breakfast there was a number of dirty glasses on the tray for the orange/apple juice. This was noticed and they were removed but again this should have been done prior to opening the doors for the guests...
