An honest review of Mr. Chan's. Sunday 30th Jan 2021 and a 5.30 booking for 5. We were a mixed party, 3 Chinese ladies and 2 English men who went to celebrate forthcoming Lunar New Year. Other reviews and the fact that the place we wanted to go in Leamington was closed made us choose here. From the off, just one waitress who coped well, was helpful and friendly. 2 more came later. Not sure if the kitchen had staffing issues, quite possibly did. Food came hot and reasonably well presented. We thought portion sizes meagre, particularly the steamed dumplings which we thought were frozen and way overpriced. We bought a 60 pack for 8gbp online yet were charged 5gbp for 4 here, not sure why we didn't get 5 = 1 each. Ribs average at best, same for the chicken wings. Mains, the Sea Bass ok, the mixed chow mein ok, as was the prawn dish, but the rest was poor. 2 dishes we were not charged for, not sure if that's a positive or negative. Some cleanliness issues within the establishment mean that we will never return. I know the place gets good reviews, and I have no reason to believe these are incorrect, so we put it down to bad...
Read moreWell, where do I start? Firstly, they got the order wrong and we were left with no rice to have as sides with the meal. When we called up to complain I had to spend over 10 minutes on the phone until thy admitted they made a mistake as they were trying to deny any responsibility & being very confrontational. After all the debate the only offer they made was to refund the rice and they weren't even going to do that until I made it clear that this level of service was not acceptable. Sadly, This was just the beginning.
When we opened the beef with bamboo shoots the smell of gone off meat just hit us, I wanted to be sick and threw it straight in the bin. We then opened the duck that looked like it had been left outside for a week, was rock hard, completely tasteless and had to be thrown in the bin. The last dish we ordered was sweet & sour chicken that was stone cold & chewier than a bone you would give to a dog.
I was utterly disgusted by what I had been served at Mr Chan's as this used to be a good place, but not anymore. I strongly suggest to try alternative to this place as it has failed on every level. Never...
Read moreWe were more than a little disappointed. Not with the food, the food was good but with the initial service, it was early just past 6 in the evening and it was as if they were trying to get us in and out before a bus load of people arrived, which may have been the case, but you shouldn't make your paying guests feel that way.
We know this is a busy little restaurant and thats why we booked, we'd been in Stratford and when planning our day thought it might be nice to stop for something to eat on the way home. Well it felt like we were on a formula 1 pitstop.
Looking at the service being offered to the other, clearly regular customers I can understand why its so popular with them. Lovely interaction with everyone and we felt like the outsiders we were.
I wouldn't book early, I'd book around 8. it's not a big place but I'd ask for a window seat they are the best.
Take your time and plan to be there for a good while and I think you'll have a lovely time. Go early and you run the risk of getting your starters before you've got your coat off...
