I was so disappointed with this Cafe today. After hearing such great things about it and having it recommended by a friend, I arrived with great expectations. Despite the fact that the board downstairs says that the cafe is open from 10 till 4, when I went upstairs at 11.50, thinking that I might have a coffee before lunch, the man who was bustling around looked less than pleased to see me and neither he nor the young girl behind the counter asked if they could help or suggested that they were only serving teas and coffees. So when I said ‘I guess I’m too early?’ And the dour looking man said yes, I promptly went out and had another wander through the lovely gardens which are definitely worth a visit. I then went back just before 12.30 and was immediately told that ‘it’d be another 10 minutes yet’. When I asked the girl standing behind the counter if I was able to order a cup of tea while I was waiting, she replied yes you can and immediately plonked an English breakfast teabag into a mug of hot water without bothering to ask if that was what I actually wanted. I took it anyway but really, why did I stay? Once it became clear that they had finished serving students and staff, I went and ordered the Leek and Tomato Pasta Bake - don’t do it. While the salads were quite nice (not outstanding but OK), the Pasta Bake was just a red coloured, goopy mush with a piece of grilled cheese on top. I ate it because I was hungry and I’d paid Twelve Pounds for it but never again. This cafe needs to decide if it wants to be a Cafe serving the public or a canteen for staff and students, or find a way to accommodate both. When I’m paying Twelve Pounds for a lunch, I don’t want to be made to feel that I’m interfering with the smooth running of their staff canteen. And invest in some customer service training -...
Read moreThis is a lovely cafe in a very special place - just walk down the valley - magical! I have been a few times and enjoyed tea, coffee , cake and toasted teacake. Today I hoped to have lunch as the menu looks great. Lunch is advertised as being served until 2.30 so as I arrived just after 2 I chose from the menu only to be told that they had stopped serving at 2 with some muttering about a power cut. Other people were still eating lovely lunches and they could still make tea and coffee. I was so disappointed and wonder now if I can trust being able to have lunch there in the future. There was no sign up about finishing lunch service early and at least 3 other people came after me wanting lunch. Also many of the lunch offerings are salads and sandwiches...

We had burgers with potato wedges and salad from the site which was lovely and...
