Popped in for a spontaneous dinner during our stay in Painswick and is pleasantly surprised by how tasty the food was! Service was quick and welcoming as well, which perfectly explains why the pub was packed with both tourists and locals on a weekday.
Scotch Egg, Piccalilli and water cress - 4/5⭐️ Crispy on the outside and Jammy in the centre with the perfect amount of seasoning - no complaints, just a simple hearty dish done well.
Beer battered haddock, chips, peas & tartare sauce - 4.5/5⭐️ Beer battered haddock with the thinnest, crispiest coating that you can’t help craving for more, and yet the chips were certainly the highlight of the dish.Pillowy interior with a satisfying crunch on the outside that is to die for!
Summer Berry Eton Mess - 3/5⭐️ Simple, tangy and light, with the summer berries being in season and are perfectly ripe. I wish there was bit more meringue bits to elevate the texture but otherwise a solid dessert!

Read moreMy wife and I have just had probably the best meal out for YEARS!!! Thank you, The Royal Oak. The landlord was most hospitable, nothing was too much. I had an amazing lamb shank with ALL the trimmings, redcurrant jous, broccoli spears, minted mash and kale. All cooked to perfection. My wife fancied scampi, only usually a "light-bite" however it was made into a main course along with a VERY substantial house salad (lots of added extras). The chips and scampi were generous portions and top class. Wines a beers served, were also great. Big selection and great quality..... Thank you all. A definite must next time we're in Painswick. PS, were celebrating our Twentieth Anniversary and also on Valentine's Day. We stayed in Painswick in 2002. Thanks to...
Read moreIf you are from the USA, do not go to the Royal Oak!! We were first in line at 6 pm when they started taking food orders. We waited for our food to come for over an hour, with the waitstaff assuring us they were working on it. Meanwhile, the tables patronized by “locals”—both inside and out—were being served their dinners, even though they put their orders in after we did. Finally, they told us our dinner would be there in 15 minutes. When that didn’t happen, we paid for our drinks and left. They did not seem to care at all. We went down the street to The Falcon pub, where the staff was very attentive and the food and wine was very good. I can only conclude that the Royal Oak is not fond of Americans. Worst...
