Winstone’s Ice Cream – A Sweet Slice of Cotswold Tradition

Nestled atop Rodborough Common just outside Stroud, Winstone’s Ice Cream is a Cotswolds gem that has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1925. Still family-run and now into its fourth generation, Winstone’s combines nearly a century of tradition with a passion for small-batch artisan production – and it shows in every scoop.

The first thing that strikes you is the setting. With sweeping views of the Gloucestershire countryside, the parlour itself is simple – more a takeaway hatch than a sit-in café – but its charm lies in its surroundings. Benches and grassy knolls make it the perfect place for a sunny stroll, cycle break or family outing, with plenty of space to enjoy your cone in peace.

Speaking of cones, the ice cream is everything you’d hope for and more. With a generous rotation of flavours including indulgent classics like salted caramel, rum & raisin, and strawberries & cream, to more inventive seasonal offerings like rhubarb crumble and honey & ginger, there’s something for everyone. They also cater thoughtfully to dietary needs with a selection of dairy-free sorbets – the mango is especially refreshing.

Prices are reasonable for the quality and portions: £2.00 for a single scoop, £4.00 for a double, and just 50p more for a waffle cone. Hot drinks are also on offer, with coffees and teas priced between £1.70 and £2.50 – ideal if you're stopping off during a walk or cycle across the common.

For cyclists, it’s a particularly welcome pitstop. Right on popular cycling routes through the Cotswolds, Winstone’s is perfectly positioned for a break with a view and a treat to refuel.

Winstone’s Ice Cream is more than just a place to grab a cone – it’s a nostalgic experience, a celebration of heritage, and a reminder of the simple joys of countryside life. Whether you’re on two wheels, four wheels, or just two feet, it’s well...

Excellent ice cream parlour nestled in its original setting of many years. This popular stop for passers by and hikers, and even those willing to detour from the M5, find a friendly, wide variety of choices of freshly made, natural ice cream for take away, or large 1, 2 or 4 litre tubs for those special occasions. Situated on Rodborough Common surrounded by 100's of acres of land to relax, run wild or admire the passing wildlife.

Parking is limited, so take the first space you can find. This covid secure venue is quick serving and accepts cards and cash. A regular escape for me and my family with many normal flavours to choose from. (No pistachio though, or other nut for that matter, due to processing regulations).

They even do doggie friendly treats, as well as hot n...

Heard so much about this ice-cream and how lovely it is, I found it expensive and non tasting to the point I couldn't eat it, which is very unlike me with ice-cream.. Winstones ice-cream is set in a beautiful area Roborough Common with couple carparks and then lovely walks around the Common, the views are amazing, it is also on the way to Minchinhampton Common which again is beautiful and lovely views to get here it's off the A46 Bath Road from stroud or Nailsworth and can get to Cirencester, I would recommend coming to the Commons just for sitting, picnics and walking but not...

Tasty ice cream and amazing views!

Yummy! Top tips ; 1: Much bigger queues at weekends, come in week if possible 2: Bring a portable chair, so you can face the afternoon sun and have a comfy seat. No benches around there, just a slope down with average views. 3. If you are patient enough (and especially if someone else can hold the ice creams for you!) you can drive 2 mins away and eat with fantastic views of the valley
