As part of the Wetherspoons chain it meets a certain quality I'm sure we all know by now. It's nothing special, it's a little dingy to be honest.

I sat at a two person table last time which was lit by spotlights (not out of choice), I think there was supposed to be two lights for the table, but only one worked. The light that did work was in my eyes & the other was supposed to light the table I guess. This meant I was half blind & could barely see my food when it finally arrived. The person with me could see their food just fine as they had the opposite configuration of lights malfunctioning, but I couldn't see them at all since they were not directly lit & was blinded myself.

The food wasn't too bad, again nothing special. The worst part other than the lighting was the service. I waited 30 mins after finishing my main course to get my dessert. I asked for it to be sent after I finished my main & I was with someone who ate very slowly, but 10 mins after me they were finished eating too. I had also asked three or four times to get my dessert! It was actually very nice when it arrived, but certainly not worth waiting for.

I think two stars is generous based on the experience I had. I wish you luck if you try this poorly lit place, I suggest you bring a torch, some sunglasses & are prepared to walk into the kitchen yourself to get...

Thursday 4th April 9.15 am. Poor weather roads around Houghton in near grid lock due to accidents decided to call in for breakfast until traffic had calmed down. Ordered a breakfast. It appeared there were 2 members of staff serving. Waited and waited and waited but order didn't arrive. Time I had was getting tight & I then noticed that customers who had arrived after me were getting served. Went to enquire and to be honest the staffs attitude was very poor as if they couldn't give a toss. The pub was practically empty. I suggested as a sweetener that they put some black pudding on my order as as a gesture of good will. The tallest one of the two informed me that I would have to pay for it. I was offered a full refund which I took. Nobody would take any blame & staff stated it was glitch on the computer causing my order not to go through to kitchen. Poor staff attitude. Your tables need a good scrubbing as well. The ones around me all had that sticky texture and the brass tag which indicated table number was encrusted in...

Someone didn't read the order properly. We'd ordered some kids meals with the app - 2 kids fish and chips one with peas and one with corn on the cob because Mt youngest son hates peas and beans - and a chicken nuggets, chips and beans. Both fish and chips came with peas and the nuggets had both beans and the corn on the cob (strange given that you can only choose between the two and not have both!). My youngest son wasn't too happy as he normally won't touch anything that's been near peas. I managed to talk him in to giving his brother the peas and then eat what was left (he must have been really hungry as this was the first time he's done that!). Other than that, the meals were OK. We've eaten here plenty of times and its the first time they've gotten the order wrong. So long as it doesn't happen...

It was busy today as it's Saturday but there were plenty of seats and tables. We used the app and our drinks arrived quickly and not long after our food did. The server we had was friendly too. The loos are clean and big! Really impressed, I'll have to come back. I had grilled chicken katsu, pictured. Husband had Jalfrezi and son had chilli non carne, we enjoyed our food.

Comfortable and spacious pub in the town centre, enjoyed a very good breakfast here in nice clean surroundings. Not an old historical building, but function now as a pub. Good value drinks and food. New menu now includes the Wetherspoons pizza range, along with all the usual food favourites. Worth calling in on.

Pretty cramped, mediocre beer selection, good value good options. Didn't have any burns night offering on which other spoons have had. Free water on the bar which is good. Friendly staff. Had no childrens menus available so have to ask staff or check the app.
