No words..!! Honestly, I am rarely lost for words but today I had to admit defeat. After a lovely morning with friends on Dartmoor, a lovely looking pub for a pint and a bite to eat was top of our list. The woman behind the bar was probably the rudest person that I have had to deal with in a long time. Our menu choices were cheese baguette, ham baguette and a few other hot dishes. “Could I have a cheese and onion baguette please?” NO “Could I have a ham and cheese baguette please?” NO Her response, somewhat brusquely was, “We have 9 baguettes on menu, everyone asks for something different. That’s the choice.” Well all I can say is, if everyone asks for something different, then maybe show a better degree of flexibility. How hard would it be to add a slice of onion or a slice of cheese??? So, don’t expect a warm friendly welcome, don’t expect a varied menu, don’t expect a toilet in the pub, and most importantly, don’t ever expect to go back, unless of course you love an impolite and offensive lady telling you in so many words, “take it or...
Read moreIf you want to visit somewhere you’re made to feel unwelcome the minute you walk through the door then this is the place for you. We had a table booked for 1.45 and unfortunately arrived 15 minutes late due to a long journey and poor traffic in the lanes (unable to call ahead due to it being Dartmoor and no phone signal) to be met with an eye roll and ‘you were supposed to be here 15 minutes ago the kitchen closes at 2’. If I didn’t have 2 young children that needed feeding pronto we’d have walked straight back out the door, but in hindsight wish we had anyway. Terrible service, food way below par, no ice in the drinks and atmosphere was awkward from the moment we arrived - all in all a complete waste of our hard earned money. On leaving (approx 3pm), the woman behind the bar barked at someone else entering for a drink that they were closed. It would seem they don’t want the business and in my opinion don’t deserve it - visit...
Read moreCame here as the pub in Holne is currently closed for business.
Nice enough location, pleasant outdoor seating. Generally, however, extremely dated; full of traditional pub kitsch. Not necessarily a bad thing but not reflective of a particularly ambitious establishment. Outdoor gents in a poor state: not unclean but desperately in need of a refurbishment.
Food menu had a basic selection. Hard to mess up most of it (sausage, chips and beans etc) but my lamb curry was poor, verging on the unpleasant. Tasted like it came straight out if a jar and the lamb had an odd mushy texture. On the upside, a couple of good real ales on tap, well kept. Inexpensive (but not great value given the quality on offer) and nice enough staff and clearly a family run place which is good to see.
The curry aside, by no means a bad place but sub par in comparison to experiences in some other South Devon pubs (especially the outstanding Journeys End...
