This is one of the best café/ tearooms that I have EVER been to. My Mum and I wanted a day trip out to somewhere new. Looking through TripAdvisor, this gem popped up with nothing but fantastic reviews. Not knowing what was around the area, we visited anyway and I cannot explain how worth it the trip was.
We were greeted by the owners who were so polite and helpful. We originally were going to grab a cream tea, spend an hour or so there and then drive around for a bit before heading home. But the food was so reasonably priced we ended up grabbing a full English each. The portion size and their attitude of nothing is too much, made us feel as though we were guests in their home and not customers in their tearoom.
We got speaking with the husband after explaining how perfectly cooked the breakfast was, as well as how fresh each item tasted, to which we then found out it was all locally sourced. Which is a huge thumbs up from me.
We explained to the husband that we were thinking of exploring the area but we were not sure where to go. So he explained a couple of places, but realised quite quickly that our geography skills were not too great, so he proceeded to write down the directions for us, and also allowed us to borrow his map as we were going to come back a little later on for a cream tea as that was the goal of the day.
He marked the map for us with what we needed to know, and off we went.
Upon returning we were met with the same warm welcoming, and thanked them both for how helpful they had been and how much we were loving our day in Moretonhampstead.
And just like the breakfast, the cream teas were to die for. We shared a sweet cream tea and I had a cheese scone to myself, the cheese again was locally sourced, and was one of the tastiest cheese scones that I have had in a while.
If you are looking for a great day out with not only good company, good food and amazing walks and paths then I highly recommend the gateway tea room, it is an experience that you will quickly want...
Read moreWhat an absolute gem of a find. There is just too much to talk about, but I’ll give it a shot. The back story is heartwarming. Sam, with her Indian roots cooking up experiences in the kitchen, and the friendly Laurie, running the restaurant. The success of the place, with a long waiting list, because of the excellent menu, crafted fresh every season. The amazingly cosy tearoom setting. And finally, the thali style dinner, with lots of little veggies and lentils, giving people a range of tastes and spices to explore.
And finally, we left a stole in the restaurant (and were not aware of it either). After dinner, we got a call from the reception that someone has come to drop it off. Dear Laurie, having discovered the lost clothing, drove 5 miles after closing time, to pass it back to us. That’s just plain nice.
So, in a nutshell, in case I wasnt abundantly clear, I would highly recommend that you visit The Gateway Restaurant during your...
Read moreHaving visited Castle Drogo on a sunny autumn afternoon, we sought a “proper” teashop and found this gem In Moretonhampstead. This tea shop provides a friendly welcome, deliberately quaint & kitsch decor, an authentic tea service (and even His & Hers teaspoons. We had a very good toasted panino (to start with) - but that was just a decoy.. What we (Ok..I..) really wanted was CAAAAAKE. All the cakes are made by Sam and chose her Lemon cake generously dressed with a buttercream and her homemade lemon curd and David chose the irresistible-looking chocolate & salted caramel cake - (of course we were going to share..) The lemon cake was light, fluffy & did not disappoint. The chocolate cake - an absolute dream! One of those memorable experiences, found by chance - and we’ll be talking about those cakes for ages. We’ll be back 😬...
