What a Gem of a place. Seemingly, in the middle of nowhere. Arrived by taxi from Uxbridge, booked a table prior to a evening's entertainment cabaret show at the local Memorial hall, "When we are Married". The Black Horse, is warm and inviting, we stopped though not long enough to get a drink as Franco the host ushered us through to the restaurant and upgraded our table seeing that we were quite burly lads. We took a prime table with surround views of the entire establishment. Was warm and cosy with the din of family and friends in full conversation and laughter. For aperitif we had a Negroni and my brother had a Aperol spritz and a bottle of white wine with the mains. I had a Slow cooked Pork belly with Savoy cabbage and dauphinoise and an additional dauphinoise, an absolutely and fabulous meal the entire meal was delightful. Will cherish the fabulous moments and foodie memories (yum-yum). Staff were very accommodating and Chef was as pretty as her food delicious. I wanted to stay, though sadly had to go.

Top night with a great local DJ playing (cut some rug) all the best hits from the 60s to the 90s. Half price cocktails too.

Typically iconic country pub that is yet in close proximity to an underground station! Probably Chorleywood’s most loved of it’s three pubs, the Black Horse is the ideal place in the ideal spot to have a drink and some dinner, particularly roast on a Sunday 😀 - although I have yet to test, or taste, that theory, it seems pretty much guaranteed that this will be so, particularly if the happy customers I rubbed shoulders with are any indication. I just had a cappuccino, but I did browse the menu and it is certainly on my radar for another visit to sample that menu properly! And when I do, I’ll let you know. But for now, I can say that, perched on the edge of the common, yet not too many minutes across the land from Chorleywood’s Metropolitan/Chiltern Line station, the Black Horse is a dog friendly, walker friendly and family friendly pub of traditional English style. If you’re nearby, wander over the common and give it a try.

Whilst the venue is very cozy and the staff are friendly, it appeared to be that we were purposely swindled. We came in for dinner with two children and we weren’t presented with children’s menus. Our kids ate adult portions of bangers and mash and a basic pasta that was also quite the sized large bowl.

Unbeknownst to us both plates were listed on the children’s menus for £6.50 per serving but again we weren’t made aware of the children’s menu.

My wife had the buffalo chicken sandwich and there was nothing buffalo 🦬 about it. No dressing other than ketchup on the side. I went for the steak and ale pie with horseradish?? There wasn’t a trace of 🐎 radish.

And (get this) my meal was a kids size portion and it tasted like it just came out of the freezer; it reminded me of a Ramsey Gordon’s kitchen nightmares episode.

Being that it was Valentine’s Day I refrained from making a comment about menu mistakes and the bland food. I was close to expressing my dissatisfaction because the bill was just over £80.00 without the surcharge.

It’s also worth mentioning, I enjoyed a single pint of beer, and just tap water for the table. So we didn’t go crazy with drinks or juices.

Soup was very tasty! The wings smelled amazing and they happened to come with blue cheese dressing which would have made sense to include on the buffalo sandwich. I didn’t order them because we were told that the serving size is ~ 4 wings. When they were served to the table next to us, there would atleast 6 maybe 8.

It broke our bank but we didn’t want the black horse to be the dark knight and break the hearts 💔 of their other hopeful cupids.

Sorry guys, I’m in the hospitality industry and I know how much work it takes to run a restaurant from kitchen to the front of the house, so usually I’m easier on the reviews when it comes to my dining...

Went there for lunch today, only the second time out since pubs and restaurants reopened. Like most I am aware of the virus, and venturing inside any public places with people you don't know who may or may not be carrying the virus is a little daunting. The place was booked by friends we were meeting there, therefore I had no idea what to expect. If the place could be judged by the number of visitors, then the Black Horse is popular, the car park was full, but no restrictions on parking on the road. Booking for inside tables was necessary to avoid a crowd. There are some tables in the front of the pub for a quick bite and a garden at the back if you wanted to eat al fresco. Inside serving staff wore masks, but some behind the bar didn't. Customers had to as well, but could remove them when sat at their table. There are glass screens separating tables within the required distance, but with people in full flow of conversations next to you, I couldn't help feeling a little uneasy, as well as each time someone passed me and a gush of air rushed my way. However, the food was wholesome, I had the roasted chicken, and it was enough to fill the tummy to satisfaction. But can't say much about the roasted potatoes, par cooked from frozen and hard. Otherwise, bravo to all the staff for risking their health so we could have respite from the dreaded virus, however brief - we were there for about an hour and a half. Enjoy...

I’ve been going to this pub on & off for 30 plus years. However I rarely go these days due to the very low quality of food & service. I heard the chef has changed so decided to try lunch & I was so disappointed. I had a simple burger which apparently is angus beef, perhaps it was but it was cooked from frozen, the burger was so hard it was disgusting. It should have been soft & juicy. Yuck! I realise they have a small kitchen in which case create a menu that can be cooked fresh from that scenario. Stop trying to create fancy high end food when your not able to fulfill that idea. Pubs are going out of business because they don’t get the market they are even in. Good wholesome rustic food is what people want. Also when I went to pay I then go charged a service fee really for what service. I got my own cutlery & when the food came it was slapped down in front of me & then being asked “you want ketchup” Like I was at McDonald’s. Service charge should be optional & for good service. Moreover they keep staff who have absolutely no idea what service is, some people have it & you notice it when they have the ability. These guys don’t. Not a clue & the service I got was from a seasoned employee which goes to show that it’s not always experience that shines. I just paid my money & left but won’t eat...
