Cafe Unwind — Restaurant in Wales

TERRIBLE! Rude. Unfriendly. Dirty. Aggressive.

Absolutely diabolical experience. I came into the cafe to have lunch and a coffee. I entered and asked at the counter whether I should order first or sit down first and then come up to order. I was told to sit down first. I had some forms with me I needed to fill in to register with a new GP and I had to call my old GP to get some information so I sat down at a table for 2, dialed the GP and began to fill out one of the forms. Within a couple of seconds a 'lady' who appeared to be the owner walked up to my table and asked if I was going to order. I said 'yes, shortly' and asked whether there was a table with a plug socket that I could use as I just needed to complete a telephone call. I was directed to a different table and the lady commented that I wouldn't be able to sit there 'for hours' because it was a table for 4. I said: 'Don't worry I won't be here for hours, I'll probably be here around 30 minutes'. I then continued to fill in the forms and when I had been there for 11 minutes (I knew this because of the call duration on my phone) the lady came back over and said 'I am going to have to ask you to leave because you haven't ordered anything'. I was astonished, especially as the cafe was not full. I explained I was about to order and she said 'you're using our electricity and you have been here for over 20 minutes'.

Needless to say I expressed my shock at her attitude and left - will never be back. I am unclear as to why this woman was so rude to me, I can only think that perhaps the fact I am English had something to do with it as I've never had this experience in any cafe before and I was completely polite and courteous the entire time I was there. Also worth mentioning that a few tables in there were left dirty and that this manager was sitting at a table eating herself in between having a go at me. Perhaps her time would have been better served taking orders or cleaning by table service if she is so rushed!

It is insane to me that this happened, particularly as I'm a new customer. I eat out at cafes 3 to 4 times a week, often with my two children so the custom they have lost out on is quite substantial, not to mention the fact I'll be letting everyone I know in the area know...

Cafe Unwind is a not-so-well-hidden gem in Llantwit Major. I've eaten here on a few occasions and the food is always fresh, tasty and served timely. I cannot fault the service at all. If I had to pick at something, it would be the toilet requiring key access but this seems to be the trend in fast food locations these days anyway. A small thing compared to an otherwise fantastic experience.

We love Café Unwind - the selection is excellent for breakfast and lunch.

The one downside is it does not allow dogs inside. It does have outside seating but obviously this is also used by smokers so not always the nicest environment.

Overall though it's got some great meals on the menu and they're always super flexible if you want adjustments made. The milkshakes are also fabulous, and the coffee...
